GROUNDBREAKING ANIMAL SHELTER BOOK GOES INTO 4TH PRINTING

Commercial publishers said it wasn't " marketable "

Originally published in 2003, One at a Time: A Week in an American

Animal Shelter, the groundbreaking book documenting a week in a

typical US animal shelter, has been driven into a 4th printing due to

demand from readers and shelters. Nearly 20,000 copies of the book

have been distributed, an extremely strong showing from a small,

independent, non-profit publisher fighting for recognition in the

commercial publishing world.

With compelling photos and moving vignettes, the book tells the true

stories of 75 animals who passed through a typical US animal shelter

during seven days witnessed and documented by the authors. This " week

in the life " snapshot is both heartbreaking and joyous, reflecting

the reality of what happens in this nation's animal shelters: 6 to 8

million animals enter shelters every year; only half of them leave

alive. An animal is euthanized every 9 seconds in a US shelter.

Commercial publishers called the book too " sad " and " graphic " to be

marketable, and so the authors founded the non-profit organization No

Voice Unheard to publish it themselves. Despite the publishers'

predictions, the book has sold thousands of copies, and is used by

hundreds of shelters and rescue groups across the country to educate

their own communities. These organizations have distributed the book

to their local elected officials, schools, libraries, and media, to

bring to life the incomprehensible statistics that describe the

tragedy. No Voice Unheard itself has donated thousands of copies to

needy shelters, public libraries, legislators, and colleges and

universities.

One at a Time is used as a course book in university humane education

and shelter medicine classes, and has won numerous awards, including

the Humane Society of the United States Pets for Life Award and the

ASPCA Humane Issues Award.

Co-author Marilee Geyer states, " There are many, many happy endings

in shelters, and One at a Time includes those wonderful stories. But

we also chose to include the hard truth, as that is also an accurate

reflection of what happens in shelters, and so some of the material

is indeed graphic. However, we hear from readers and media that they

appreciate this honesty and that they are moved to action by this

powerful and truthful depiction of shelter life. "

Adds co-author Diane Leigh, " The book is extremely hopeful, because

it shows that this tragedy is completely preventable. We want good-

hearted people to know that in the everyday decisions they make and

actions they take, they can help end the homeless animal tragedy. We

want to see, in our lifetimes, the day when no animal dies in a

shelter for simple lack of a home, and we know it can happen – we

each have the power to bring about that day. One at a Time shows us

how. "

One at a Time: A Week in an American Animal Shelter is available at

Borders, Amazon, and independent bookstores everywhere. It can also

be ordered direct from the publisher at www.NoVoiceUnheard.org. A

special " Giving Package " is also available from the publisher – 5

books at a discounted price for readers to give as gifts or donations

to educate their own communities. A steep non-profit discount is

available to animal shelters and rescue organizations.

No Voice Unheard's second book, Thought to Exist in the Wild:

Awakening from the Nightmare of Zoos is by author/activist Derrick

Jensen. More information about this new book can be found at

www.NoVoiceUnheard.org.

No Voice Unheard is a non-profit, tax exempt 501©3 independent

publisher whose books

illuminate important social issues and create unique voices on behalf

of those who are unseen, ignored or disregarded by society.

No Voice Unheard titles are distributed by Biblio Book Distribution.
