International Day for Korean Dogs and Cats - July 25, 2007 The Animal Welfare Institute is hosting a protest in Washington, D.C. to condemn the inhumane treatment of cats and dogs killed for human consumption in South Korea. Similar protests will be held in many other cities throughout the world as part of the third annual International Day for Korean Dogs and Cats, sponsored by In Defense of Animals (IDA) and Animal Freedom Korea (AFK). When: July 25, 2007, 12:00 p.m. Where: Embassy of the Republic of Korea 2450

Massachusetts Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20008 Contact: Serda Ozbenian, (703) 836-4300, serda Background Information: In 1991, Korea passed the Animal Protection Law, prohibiting the human consumption of dogs and cats and considering them “domestic pets.” Currently, however, there is no penalty for violating this law. Cats and dogs suffer unspeakably cruel deaths. Companion and stray cats are put in sacks, pounded against the ground, and then boiled—sometimes while still alive. Their liquefied remains are then sold as a cure for rheumatism. Two million dogs are slaughtered each year. Dogs who are killed for consumption are either stolen or lost companion animals, or those raised on horrific and unsanitary dog farms. The dogs are transported to the markets in tiny cages, then electrocuted, strangled or beaten to death. An estimated 6,484 stores in Korea participate in the trade in dog meat. What you can do: Please write these Korean officials to request respectfully that they strengthen the laws protecting cats and dogs in their country by including harsh penalties for violations. You may wish to remind them that Korea’s Animal Protection Law prohibits the consumption of cats and dogs. The law acknowledges that these intelligent animals are pets—not food.
