Let's keep the momentum going and send even more. If you haven't yet taken action, there's still time. You can also keep tabs on the count with our " belugometer " and send beautiful beluga e-cards to all your friends reminding them to get involved. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the agency responsible for regulating aquaculture, is hoping to triple domestic fish farming by 2025, but sea ranching, as some call it, can endanger the environment. Drugs and fish waste can pollute nearby waters. Escaped fish can spread disease and parasites, and weaken the gene pool of wild fish. Moreover, it can take more than 6 pounds of wild fish to feed 1 pound of some farmed species, resulting in a loss of important forage fish and ocean protein. Ocean conservancy is taking the lead to ensure that aquaculture is developed safely and sustainably in the US.
