Guest guest
" The Ocean Conservancy " This Tax Season, Californians Can Help Sea Otters In exactly one month from now our taxes are due. If you are like the majority of Americans (myself included) you dread doing your taxes. But, this year you can ease your pain and help save sea otters at the same time just by checking off a certain box on your California tax form. All you have to do is donate to the California Sea Otter Fund when filling out your tax forms. A small contribution goes a long way to protecting this species fighting for survival. Once, the sea otters of California and Baja were believed hunted to extinction. Then in 1938, a remnant colony was discovered in a remote area off the Big Sur coast. However, the population was slow to recover and in 1977 the California sea otter was listed under the Endangered Species Act. Today, they are still threatened with extinction. Last year, The Ocean Conservancy helped pass legislation to create this easy check-off that sets aside funds for sea otter research and recovery. But, the box will disappear from future income tax forms unless California taxpayers donate $250,000 this season. So, this April, please donate to the California Sea Otter Fund when filling out your tax forms. Sea otters desperately need our help. The funds raised this year--and hopefully for many, many years to come--will help put sea otters on the road to recovery and protect them from further threats to their survival.
