nurse and animal activist called terroristThu, 8 Mar 2007 14:25:27 -0600"Johnson, Carol" carol.johnson "Joanie Stambaugh \(E-mail 3\)" the_hardluck_hounds, "Jason Williams \(E-mail\)" bananakaboom, "Denise Wilson \(E-mail\)" DeniseWilson Nurse's fight for animals http://www.portsmouthtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleID=2109439 & SectionID=455 She's 50 years old, a pet lover and a nurse, but Sarah Whitehead has just been convicted of terrorising employees at an animal testing lab. The News finds out why she has become an animal activist By day she is a nurse helping to care for seriously ill patients. But once Sarah Whitehead is away from the hospital wards she turns into an angry animal rights protester. When not on shift most of her time is spent demonstrating outside animal testing laboratories across the south – the very ones that develop drugs to keep her patients alive. However her protests landed her in court this week following a hate-filled campaign against staff at Wickham Laboratories in

Wickham. The seemingly mild-mannered 50-year-old shouted 'disgraceful scum' and 'animal murderers' at staff. She even chillingly warned one lab worker: 'I know where you live. You're safe now, wait until dark when the Animal Liberation Front come.'Despite her conviction Whitehead has vowed to continue her fight to protect animals and doesn't see her caring day job as a contrast to her militant campaigning. She said: 'There's a lot of health workers in the animal rights movement and people that work with those with children and people with special needs. We are not mindless thugs.'The people inside the labs are animal murderers. They come out and they are laughing and you know animals have been murdered.'It's the same feeling people would get if there was a paedophile in their street. People have to remember I'm angry. I'm angry there's animals crying out in suffering and the law

allows it.'People walk past butchers and fur shops and don't care.'We in the animal rights movement are angry, committed and fighting. That doesn't mean we are nasty people. Anger can be channelled in the right way. And if it is channelled towards achieving change it can be justified.'As a nurse, Whitehead, who refuses to say where she works, sees people treated with drugs tested on animals each day. But she said there was no conflict between her job and her beliefs.'I do not man the drugs trolley or administer drugs,' she said.'I know all the drugs have been tested on animals.'But they are already tested. I do believe the majority of these tests aren't necessary because pharmaceutical companies will test and bring out different versions of the same drug. That's business.'I am not saying people shouldn't take drugs. People need medication. Research needs to be done but not on animals.'There are 450

alternatives to testing on animals. Last Updated: 08 March 2007
