Guest guest
URGENT - HELP PROTECT THE WHALES AND OTHER ANIMALS For more information: http://whales.greenpeace.org/ Dear Greenpeace Activist, February 1 , 2007 As you read this, the Japanese fleet has already started its journey toward Antarctica, where it plans to kill 945 whales - including 10 endangered fin whales - all under the guise of 'scientific research.'I'll be there too, fighting to help the whales escape. But getting to the Southern Ocean, and placing ourselves between a grenade-tipped harpoon and a helpless whale takes more than just courage. It will cost $247,000 to put our ship and crew on the high seas. To stop the Japanese hunting fleet we urgently need YOUR support now. Every dollar you donate means another hour, day or week that we can stay in the Southern Oceans, working tirelessly to confront the Japanese whaling fleet. How successful we'll be - and how many whales will survive - depends on your help. Please take action immediately to help stop the killing.I am making a commitment to journey to the Southern Ocean and do everything I can to protect whales from a senseless hunt. Will you commit to help save these whales too?Chasing the Japanese fleet is what the Greenpeace crew and I can do to help protect the oceans, and the whales that belong there. But what we do is only possible with your support. Please, do what you can - take a moment to support our work today. Sincerely,Melanie DuchinOceans CampaignerP.S. You'll be the first to know when we engage the Japanese fleet, and I'll be sure to keep you informed about how your support is making the difference in the Southern Ocean. 3 Ways to Help 1: Donate Now Help Greenpeace Take a Stand. Dear friend, In the next few months, Japanese whalers plan to kill 945 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Greenpeace's ship, the Esperanza, is on its way to stop the killings. Last year our activists managed to stop the whalers from killing 82 whales by putting themselves between the whales and the harpoons. But what we do in the Southern Ocean will not be enough to save all the whales! That's why the whales need YOU to campaign with us. Please ask the Danish government not to attend the so-called "Normalization" meeting that Japan is holding next month in Tokyo. The Japanese government plans to use the meeting to create the illusion that most of the world wants to end the moratorium on commercial whaling - but this is clearly not the case! Denmark's presence at the meeting will be advertised to the media by their Japanese hosts as evidence of support for the Japanese position...which means more killing of whales! Thousands of Greenpeace supporters around the world are contacting Danish embassies in dozens of countries - please join in! To get more involved in the campaign, visit our cool new I-GO site. Remember 945 whales are waiting for your help. Sincerely, Shane RattenburyOceans campaigner P.S. Join the Biggest Crew Ever! There are lots of things you can do to stop whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Campaign with us! P.P.S. You can save whales. Click here now to ask Denmark to Defend the Whales! I want you to be among the first to know about our breaking investigation of cruelty and animal abuse by multibillion-dollar retailer PetSmart. What You Can Do 1. Please don't buy anything from PetSmart until it stops selling all animals.2. Write to PetSmart and tell the company that you want the company to end the sale of all animals and sell animal supplies only.3. If you visit a PetSmart store, check to make sure that the animals are being treated well. Find out how you can spot neglect or abuse at PetSmart.4. Make an urgent donation to help support our campaigns and continue PETA's important investigative work.Over a three-month period in two different stores, a PETA undercover investigator documented sickening conditions for small, helpless animals—including hamsters, rats, lizards, chinchillas, and birds. Our investigator found that animals were deprived of adequate veterinary care and were slowly dying—out of customers' sight in back rooms. More than 118 animals died over the course of the investigation. You can take action today to stop this needless suffering of animals. Please help stop this cruelty. For years, PetSmart has assured PETA that sick and injured animals in its 885 stores are given veterinary care when they need it. However, our investigation and reports from concerned customers at numerous other PetSmart stores have shown that PetSmart routinely sells sick and injured animals, including guinea pigs with eye and upper respiratory infections, sick and dying betta fish, and suffering birds. Among the birds PetSmart has sold are mite-infested parakeets, a cockatoo who was screaming and bobbing neurotically from stress, and a Jardin's parrot who was "very ill" in a "dirty cage with filthy water." And those are just the animals who customers can see. When PETA first alerted PetSmart's corporate headquarters about the animal suffering our investigator had uncovered in the Manchester, Connecticut, store's back room, the company responded that the store has an outstanding "pet care team" and an "exceptional pet care record." However, our undercover video and photos reveal a very different story. Please tell PetSmart that you want the company to act humanely and stop this cruel commerce.PETA investigators have exposed hideous abuses inflicted on innocent animals in laboratories, factory farms, and anywhere else animals have suffered away from the eyes of a caring public. By working together with supporters like you who aren't afraid to speak up for animals, we've won many hard-fought victories that have improved the lives of millions—if not billions—of animals. Furthermore, we've helped change the way Fortune 500 corporations treat animals.Today, we need you to speak up loud and clear once again. Please tell PetSmart to end live-animal sales and focus on adopting out homeless animals from animal shelters and rescue groups. The animals suffering at PetSmart are depending on you!Very truly yours,Ingrid E. NewkirkPresident If you can’t see the images in this email, please click here to view it as a Web page. International Fund for Animal Welfare January 30, 2007 Ban on seal products brings new hope 2006 Seal Campaign in Photos View Slideshow Another cruel seal hunt is quickly approaching in Canada and hundreds of thousands of young seals will be slaughtered this spring. Is it really possible to stop this annual tragedy which continues year after year despite being economically and environmentally unjustified? Thanks to your continued support the answer is a resounding YES. Just look what you accomplished last year. Bans on the sale of seal-derived products took huge steps forward in 2006 across Europe and around the world. In fact Belgium has just passed the first national ban on (all) seal derived products in the EU! Last year alone: The European Parliament issued a written declaration calling for a ban on the import, export and sale of harp and hooded seal products. The Italian Parliament temporarily suspended the import of sealskins and seal derived products. A legislative proposal to prohibit the commerce in seal products has also been announced. The German Parliament voted unanimously on a motion to ban the import of seal products. The motion calls on the government to work towards an EU-wide ban and to institute a temporary ban in Germany until a European ban is passed. Mexico banned the import and export of all marine mammals (including seals) and their derived products. Please join me again on the ice this year In order to push closer to an end of the seal hunt IFAW will continue to document the commercial seal hunt and its ongoing cruelty as well as push for the enactment of seal product bans across Europe. Although members of our monitoring team have received threats and been physically assaulted with boat hooks and clubs, we believe it is important for Canadians, and the world, to understand the reality of what is happening to these young seals. This is not a campaign that will be won suddenly in one fell swoop. It will be achieved one small victory at a time until there is no more market for seal products and the Canadian government will be forced to end the hunt once and for all. Victories such as the European product bans in 2006 and the new triumphs we are certain to attain this spring with your help. Sincerely,Fred O’ReganPresident and CEO P.S. PO Box 193 • 411 Main Street Yarmouth Port, MA 02675www.ifaw.org January 27, 2007 JOIN OUR ACTIVIST NETWORK | SEND TO A FRIEND | DONATE NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH FUR?If you are like me, the sight of fur is a strong reminder of just how callous and cruel to animals people can be. If you're as disgusted as I am—and I hope you are—please read on. We need your help to get the "No Fur" message out to friends, family members, colleagues, and even strangers about why buying and wearing even a little bit of fur must stop. Furriers and their cohorts in the fashion industry are doing everything that they can to promote fur nowadays, sensing a critical turning point in public opinion. They've even gone so far as disguising the species of the animals the fur came from or mislabeling the fur as fake. When someone—anyone—asks you what's wrong with wearing fur, please tell him or her: everything! Please let people know that there is not a single federal law that protects animals killed for fur in the U.S. This means that fur farmers get away with cramming minks, foxes, raccoons, and chinchillas into tiny, filthy wire cages—where they stay for months or years, unable to run or play or enjoy any freedom, family, or friendship. They are commonly exposed to snow and sleet in winter and scorching heat in summer and fed slop instead of proper food. They are denied water, and they are killed in frightening and painful ways. Animals raised for fur suffer poisoning, gassing, neck-breaking, and anal electrocution. To get "wild fur," trappers set metal traps to catch lynx, rabbits, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and wolves and leave them in traps to suffer for days—in all types of weather. The animals grow increasingly hungry and thirsty before some trappers even try to kill them by jumping on their chests. Many are skinned alive. Even dogs and cats are killed for their fur—especially for fur collars, hood trims, glove linings, and the like. PETA's undercover investigation into the Chinese fur trade revealed unimaginable cruelty. Millions of dogs and cats are bludgeoned, boiled, strangled with wire nooses, and bled to death before they are skinned for their fur. Imagine if your beloved dog or cat were stolen and killed to be made into fur trinkets or fur trim for American consumers! It's unthinkable, yet it happens. The fact that it is illegal to import dog or cat fur into the U.S. hasn't stopped this part of the fur trade. The garments are simply mislabeled—marked as fox, raccoon, or some exotic-sounding species. China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments that end up on clothing racks in the United States. If someone buys any fur whatsoever—even the tiniest scrap—he or she could be wearing a dog or a cat. Either way, the consumer is wearing the remains of an animal who was tortured. When you're asked what's wrong with fur, please tell people—and keep talking. Explain that every fur coat, lining, or trim represents the immense suffering of several dozen animals—including "trash catch" like dogs and opossums—and is made from the damaged skins of animals who struggled when someone tried to insert electric wires into their genitals. That's right, several dozen—just for one garment! With so many alternatives available to consumers, why would anyone wear fur? Why would any thinking person perpetuate the abuse and murder of millions of dogs, cats, foxes, minks, chinchillas, raccoons, and other creatures? Please see why dozens of celebrities have said "No!" to fur. Over the next several weeks, I will be sending you up-to-date news on our latest efforts against the international fur industry, including the heart-wrenching practice of "culling" baby seals in Canada. It's a tough but vital fight. I'll be sure to include immediate actions that you can take to help. Thank you. Very truly yours,Ingrid E. NewkirkPresident 1. Never buy or wear fur. Go out of your way to educate your friends, family members, and colleagues on why they should never buy or wear fur. Use our online materials. 2. Educate yourself about the true cost of fur by viewing video footage of PETA's shocking undercover investigation. Share facts from that video and pass it on to others. 3. Learn polite and effective ways to engage people—including fur-wearers—in conversations about this cruel industry. 4. Question fashion retailers—and even pet-supply stores that carry furry animal toys—about their use of fake fur. If you have any doubts about whether it's fake, don't buy it! Protect the World's Greatest Salmon Fishery Urge the BLM to protect federal land in Bristol Bay Alaska against mining The Bureau of Land Management (part of the Department of the Interior) is quietly planning to open up one million acres of federal public lands in the Bristol Bay watershed of southwest Alaska to the mining and oil and gas industries. These lands were ordered closed to mineral development in 1972 and support a wild and healthy ecosystem today. Your support is needed to keep them this way! The Bristol Bay Watershed supports: World class salmon and rainbow trout fisheries within the Kvichak and Nushagak Rivers' tributaries. Critical migration corridors, including calving and winter grounds for the Mulchatna caribou herd, as well as forage for trophy brown bear and moose. A thriving sport fishing and hunting industry, as well as the traditional lifestyles of Alaskan Native residents. TAKE ACTION! Please take a few moments to send a letter to the BLM. But we must speak up before February 23, 2007, or they will not hold public hearings on this critical matter. Please help by sending a message directly to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, letting them know you want public hearings on polar bear protection. They are not required by law to hold such hearings, but they can be swayed if we all speak up. CLICK HERE to show your support for polar bear protection. GLOBAL WARMING DISRUPTING BEAR HIBERNATION IN EUROPEIt's not just Arctic creatures suffering from the negative effects of global warming. Spanish scientists are blaming global warming for the fact that brown bears appear to have stopped hibernating in Spain's northern Cantabrian Mountains, the first bears known not to hibernate in Europe. According to Douglas Futuyma, professor of ecology and evolution at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, "There is a grave concern about the prospects of a great number of species. They are likely to be harmed by temperature changes, by mismatch between their life cycles and the altered seasonal life cycles of species on which they depend, and by invasion of competing species that are better adapted to warmer conditions." Incredibly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering removing lead entirely from the list of pollutants it controls under the Clean Air Act. Tell the EPA that it must continue to use the best available science to protect the air we breathe from dangerous lead pollution. Sincerely, Michael HalpernNational Field OrganizerScientific Integrity Program Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2006-0735 Dear Administrator Johnson, I am writing regarding Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2006-0735. Lead is one of the most harmful toxins on Earth, and is especially hazardous for children. A federal lead pollution standard has been extremely successful in protecting the air we breathe and the health of American families. The EPA proposal to remove lead from monitoring and control under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards is misguided and will harm public health. While we have made progress in curbing lead pollution, significant air emission sources remain. We must continue to use the best available science to guide decisions regarding effective pollution monitoring and acceptable pollution levels. I urge you to reject any proposal to eliminate the lead standard. Furthermore, the EPA must fulfill its obligation under the Clean Air Act to protect American health and safety by allowing the best available science to guide the agency's decisions. Sincerely, Take Action! Instructions:Click here to take action on this issue. Tell-A-Friend:Visit the web address below to tell your friends about this. Tell-a-Friend! More Information:The Clean Air Act requires the EPA to regulate all air pollutants that pose a threat to public health and welfare by establishing the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The EPA is required to apply the best available science to update the standards every five years. Six highly dangerous air pollutants are monitored under these standards: ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and lead. Federal regulation over the last three decades has reduced the quantity of lead in people's blood by over 78 percent; this stands as one of the crowning achievements of the Clean Air Act. Ingestion or inhalation of even low levels of lead poses severe risks to humans. Lead poisoning damages the major organs and causes osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, anemia, memory problems, and seizures. Children are at the greatest risk, as low levels of lead can cause lowered IQ levels and learning deficits. More... SAY NO TO FOOD CLONING Just as 2006 was drawing to a close, the Food and Drug Administration announced it had finished its long-awaited assessment of the risk from eating milk or meat from cloned animals. The agency said it found no significant health risks to humans eating these products, despite the fact that no long- term studies have been done and cloned animals often suffer from serious defects and health problems. The agency's announcement kicked off a 90-day comment period on their draft "risk assessment" document.Right now there is a "voluntary moratorium" on the sale of milk and meat from cloned animals or their offspring. The FDA could lift that moratorium, allowing the sale of cloned food products, after it finalizes the risk assessment. This means that the agency is likely to approve the sale of food from cloned animals sometime in 2007.FDA's support for animal cloning ignores widespread scientific concern about the health problems suffered by clones, and the uncertainty about whether or not it is safe to eat milk or meat from these potentially sick animals. The FDA's position also ignores the ethical and animal welfare concerns that come with the cloning process. To make matters worse, FDA has said that cloned food will not have to be labeled, so consumers will have no way to avoid these controversial experimental foods.Click here to tell FDA that you don't want meat or milk from clones! Here is more information on cloning.
