Guest guest
Today we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man whose ideas and dreams challenge all nations to maintain an ecological respect for the earth and all of its inhabitants. I'm sure that he would agree that we need love, justice, and an economic equality that enables all of us to have clean air, water, and healthy, viable land. This combination of spirit and concern for the sacredness of all life and the health of the natural environment is a prophetic vision. We need the spirit, concern and vision of King as we tackle the problems of Global Warming and the Climate Change Crises. If we are going to save our planet, we must act now before we tip over the side, slipping beyond no possible return. As King said in a speech not long before his assassination: " We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood -- it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, 'Too late.' " The great Martin Luther King, Jr., also warned that " our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. " What must matter most today, right now, is saving our sacred planet and all its inhabitants, and we can no longer stay silent or it will indeed become too late. It is the ultimate test of our time, it may be the ultimate test of all time. " The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy. " King's words ring as true today and they did in 1965.
