2,500 Scientists: No Doubt About Global Warming

One of Canada's top climate scientists, Dr. Gordon McBean, chair of

policy in the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction at Western

Ontario University, said Friday that a report slated to be released

next month in Paris by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

will highlight how human activity is heating up the planet much

faster than experts had previously expected. He indicated that

mounting evidence about the impact and causes of global warming is

starting to set off alarm bells for the world's leading researchers.

 

The report will be the IPCC's fourth assessment of the latest peer-

reviewed scientific literature since the 1990s. The panel is basing

the report on the findings of 2,500 experts from 130 countries,

looking at new methods of measuring the relationship between carbon

dioxide emissions and temperature, as well as the accelerated

effects of climate change when permafrost starts to melt in northern

regions, explained McBean.

 

The university professor said the latest findings have virtually

eliminated doubt about what is happening to the climate because of

greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, which are released from

the burning of fossil fuels. Climate scientists have predicted the

earth could heat up by anywhere between two to six degrees Celsius

above pre-industrial levels by the end of the 21st century because

of the greenhouse gases that trap heat from sunlight in the earth's

atmosphere. Apart from melting ice sheets and rising sea levels,

climate change has also been linked to extreme weather events,

droughts, food poisoning, water contamination and infectious

diseases.
