Guest guest
The " CURTAIN OF ORIGAMI WHALES PROJECT " " December '06 With each year Japan, Norway, and Iceland increase their self-made quotas to hunt whales. This year the whaling quotas from Japan (1,173), Norway (1,052), and Iceland (50-70) total 2,285 whales. This is an increase of 885 additional whales in just 2 years since the 1,400 origami whales project (in 2004). [For background information on the Curtain of Origami Whales, please scroll down this page to *Children's Whale Art project (Spring & Summer 2004)]. In 3 years, over 5,400 whales will have been slaughtered. Since 1986, the IWC (International Whaling Commission) voted for a moratorium on whaling, Japan, Norway, and Iceland have slaughtered over 28,500* whales. In mid-June 2006, through co-sponsorship from WSPA.org the curtain of origami whales was exhibited at the WHALEWATCH.org base of operations suite, during the 58th annual meeting of the IWC (International Whaling Commission) in St. Kitts/Nevis. An additional section of 885 origami whales was added to the original curtain, representing the increase in whaling quotas of this year. There is an urgent need to raise awareness concerning the ever-increasing threat by the whaling nations towards the return of IWC sanctioned commercial whaling. As reported by HSUS (the Humane Society of the United States) " the whaling moratorium is still in place, but Japan may be just warming up to its newfound power. " (to read the report from HSUS, " St. Kitts Declaration Felt Far and Wide " , please click here) We need *28,500 origami whales for our " Curtain of Origami Whales " project. My vision is to raise awareness and call for action through inviting public participation in creating this curtain (which upon completion would be 4 feet high, and over 200 feet in length) as a memorial for the lives of Whales lost since the moratorium on whaling. The curtain would be displayed during the 59th annual IWC meetings in May 2007. Whales in all oceans are threatened. This project is global in scope, and children (and adults) of all ages, schools, organizations, individuals, from all nations are invited to participate to raise awareness to the numbers that have been killed, as well as the need to halt further slaughter of these amazing Beings. Would you like to help by folding and then sending origami whales to me? If you would like to participate, here are links with instructions on how to fold origami whales: http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/japan/orig_whale.htm http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/origami/whale http://library.thinkquest.org/27152/towns/oriville/oriver/practice/04.htm I may also be contacted by e-mail at peggyo to correspond about the project & /or to receive a pdf file with folding diagrams of origami whales. Please send origami whales: Peggy Oki, P.O. Box 864, Carpinteria, CA 93014, U.S.A. Thank you for consideration to help with this project!
