Largest Tropical Forest Certification in the World

The Rainforest Alliance has granted Forest Stewardship

Council (FSC) certification to 3.7 million acres (1.5

millions hectares) of rainforest in the central Amazon

owned and managed by a group of Kayapó, who harvest

and sell Brazil nuts from the land. It is the largest

area of tropical forest to receive FSC certification,

which balances the need for income from forest

products with biodiversity conservation and water and

soil protection.

The Kayapó of the Bau Indigenous Territory is

currently the only indigenous group in Brazil that has

FSC-certified forestlands. The group received the

certificate from the Rainforest Alliance in

collaboration with our locally-based partner

organization, the Institute for Agricultural and

Forestry Management and Certification. Brazil now

takes the lead as the Latin American country with the

most FSC-certified forestlands, totaling approximately

12.4 million acres -- 6.7 million acres in natural

forest and 5.7 million acres in plantations.

The certification will also help control development

along BR 163, a 1,094-mile, partially paved highway

that runs through the Brazilian Amazon. The government

plans on paving the entire road to open up access to

the region. Critics are concerned this will increase

deforestation and make the area more vulnerable to

exploitation. The Bau Indigenous Territory is in the

Para region, near the BR 163, and certification of

these lands will help guarantee that they are used

sustainably for years to come.

KLM Takes Off with Sustainable Coffee!

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has pledged to serve

Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee on all its

flights, a first for any European airline. KLM, which

serves more than 22 million cups of coffee every year,

will get at least 30 percent of its beans from coffee

farms that have met the Rainforest Alliance's strict

set of environmental and social standards.

Tensie Whelan, executive director of the Rainforest

Alliance, calls the commitment progressive, and says,

" The volumes of coffee the company purchases will have

a positive impact on the lives of farmers who are

doing the right thing -- managing their farms in

environmentally and socially sound ways. "

KLM joins two other airlines that are already serving

Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee to their

passengers. Asiana Airlines in Korea began serving

certified coffee on business class flights earlier

this year and All Nippon Airways (ANA) in Japan began

serving Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee to

individuals in its lounges in 2005.

The Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee served on KLM

comes from shaded coffee farms in the highlands of

Colombia and the cerrado region of Brazil, a vast

savanna dotted with scattered trees. Because this

ecosystem is rapidly disappearing, it is critical that

people of this region earn their living in a

sustainable way that conserves biodiversity.

" One Dollar Concert " to Promote Rainforest

Conservation

A " One Dollar Concert " at Carnegie Hall is scheduled

for Saturday, January 6, 2007, at 8 PM. The concert

features Brazilian João Carlos Martins -- pianist,

turned conductor -- and his Bachiana Chamber

Orchestra. The program will include Bach's Orchestral

Suite #1, Villa Lobos' Preludio Bachiana Brasiliera

#4, and the world premiere of a specially commissioned

piano concerto by composer-pianist, Stefan Meylaers,

entitled Amazonas.

All seats will be reserved and priced at $1.00 to call

attention to the preservation of the Amazon rainforest

and its crucial role in the Earth's environment.

Founded three years ago by Mr. Martins, the 27-member

Bachiana Chamber Orchestra has been touring Brazil and

recently recorded all of Bach's Orchestral Suites. In

association with the Bachiana Chamber Orchestra, the

Bachiana Foundation is now starting a partnership with

The Amazon Region Protected Areas Program to expand

the Amazon awareness campaign through the performing

arts. The concert on January 6th will be the

orchestra's first American appearance.
