Guest guest
Updated info: Please crosspost! Urgent rescue situation involving approx. 80 small pot bellied pigs being shot with guns and bows/arrows and mauled by dogs in Barbersville, FL (between Ocala and Daytona Beach). Please respond for the complete story if you've missed anything to date on this horrific situation! For the 40 or so fortunate animals we were able to catch up and get to safety Saturday: the vet called and can come out in the afternoon, Monday, to get started on the neuters and vetting. This is going to throw things a little off from the first email I sent. We'll need to put up a pen here at Rooterville FIRST to be ready to receive the neutered males, then we'll be able to concentrate on Mel's place, where the rest of the pigs from this group will be staying until they find homes. We have many injured pigs in the first group, mostly dog maulings. There is one pig that has been caught by a neighbor who has a gunshot wound completely through the top area of his neck, if anyone wishes to help him especially, please speak up. He has been alive for several days that we know of. Here's what we have on the agenda for Monday: We need to put up a pen at Rooterville, near Gainesville, for the neutered males of the group. We'll need to put up fencing at Mel's (near Alachua) for the unspayed females, they'll need 2 shots of Lutalyse 48 hrs apart so we'll need help catching them up and marking them both Monday and Wed, this timing is crucial. We want to take pics of each pig, number them and get their vitals because we have about 50 that have been offered homes so far (totally AWESOME!). So, we'll need a picture taker/secretary as well as vet "techs" there when the vet arrives. He could not give a definite time, afternoon is what he expects. We need to get them out of the trailer and the pregnant ones who are currently confined in the stalls need to be able to access the outside. We'll need to get a load of hay and get it spread out for them and the pigs here at Rooterville too, its supposed to be in the 40's over the next few nights. For the 10 ready to deliver sows, we'll need to get heat lamps in the stalls for the babies to prepare for their arrival or they will not survive. The work has just begun, so please make a comittment to be there for these piggies over the long haul. Getting them out of danger is the easiest and most emotional part. Now comes the nitty gritty of rescue work and it ain't for sissies! We'll be needing people to make a trip back to Barbersville to get some more pigs as well, but we need a place for them to go. We are hoping to do it on Friday, if we have enough help and a place for them, because the "hunters" seem to like to spend their Friday evenings and Saturday mornings killing things. Let's spoil their weekend! If anyone can offer temporary safe haven for the next group, PLEASE let me know! This is URGENT. Help with fencing is available if that's the only thing stopping someone from being able to help. Again, this is URGENT, there is no where for the rest of the pigs to go, we have all the animals we can handle up here at this time. If one male and one female or one pregnant female are left behind, this mess will continue and pigs will continue to suffer. Lets not leave the job half done. We can deliver them if its not too far from Barbersville or off of the route to Gainesville. These are SMALL pigs, most all of them are well under 50lbs, smaller than a cocker spaniel. We are taking comittments for individual animals and arranging transport. All pigs adopted out to approved homes/sanctuaries/rescues will be spayed/neutered, wormed and vaccinated. All pigs travelling out of state will have health certs and be blood tested. These animals need help, they are the innocent victims in this mess and those that we had to leave behind are in grave danger. There were many dead ones laying alongside the road, victims of "hunters" and "hunters" (an off duty FHP deputy and his 15 yr old son) killed one with bow and arrow on Friday evening, even though they know that people are trying to help them. "Hunters" were out again the next morning at sunrise. They are relentless killers and they are leaving dead and wounded animals. So, please let me know that you're ready to do what you can to help these animals out! Please call me at 352-262-1412. I am going to have to take tomorrow off of work to be there for them. If anyone has any pull or contacts with HSUS, PETA, Best Friends, ANYONE, this is a rescue that is just too big for us locally. We simply don't have the resources to do all that needs to be done. The animals need help! Other organizations are always ready to help dogs and cats, these poor pigs lives are just as important! Donations can be made at our website at www.rooterville.org or www.pigsaspets.org We'll be trying to get web pages up soon to show the horrific situation and the piggies. Donations are tax deductible and can also be mailed to: Rooterville, PO Box 585, Archer, FL 32618-0585 or Pigs As Pets Association, 14338 Cristobal St SE, Ft Meyers, FL 33905-2335.
