GAFFNEY -- Cherokee County officials are reviewing an offer from a North Carolina company to buy euthanized adult cats from the local animal shelter. The company's general manager David Smith said in a letter that LBS Biological Inc. of Graham, N.C., proposed the purchase. The cats will become specimens in biology labs in high school and college courses nationwide.Cherokee County Animal Control Officer Donnie Crowe said Friday that Smith recently visited the county animal shelter in Gaffney and presented a contract for consideration."I made the finance committee of the County Council aware of the proposal. We're getting more information. There has been no action on this," he said.No decision had been madeon the proposal, but Clary said it is being studied. The company said it would buy euthanized cats for $4 each. The carcasses must be between 12 and 36 inches in length and weigh 18 pounds or less.Crowe said between 800 to 1,000 adult cats are euthanized at the shelter annually at a cost of $1 each. "That's my best estimate. The numbers fluctuate," he said. The council would receive a profit of about $3 per cat.LBS said it would provide a freezer facility to store the cats and pick them up on an "as needed" basis. The euthanized cats are now disposed of at the county landfill.Under the proposal, the carcasses would be preserved with solutions of formalin, phenol, ethylengylcol and water. They would then be injected with a colored latex solution so students can more easily view the veins and arteries of the cat's circulatory system, the letter stated.LBS Biological is described by Smith as a business that concentrates in the preparation and preservation of euthanized feline carcasses to be used as educational material. The fee is offered to offset the cost of euthanasia and supplement the county's financial resources for use in other programs, according to the letter. The contract being studied by the county's attorneys is for 12 months and would continue for another year unless either party decided to terminate by giving a two-week written notice.Janet S.
