Terry Fritzges <ingaVA.Tapp Vet/Pound.Does not want Rescue help, wont use Petfinderto help the Animals.VA.Tapp Vet/Pound.Does not want Rescue help, wont use Petfinder to help the Animals. Please write/call County to make them have a county pound Hi,Please Read. Can you Please write Letters to Tapp,VA(Essex Co)Board of Directors to have them help the Tapp Vet Pounds animals Please.http://www.tappahannock-va.gov/official.htm 2 main problems here: 1.The vets and employees don't care about the stray animals. They dont care that most of them are being Killed there. They are not Rescue friendly, are rude and mean to people who try to help the animals there.People have tried to

help and they dont want to bother or take the time and on top on that they are rude to people who want to help. The Vets there makes their money from their clients and not from the strays. The County gives them money to keep the strays for 7-10 days and then Kill. But they make 95% of their money from their clients. So this is probably why they are not rescue friendly and are rude to people are they just do not want to bother. They care only about the money and not doing the right thing. I dont understand how people can treat animals like this. I guess they dont think they are doing anything wrong. This is the pound that used the Ammonia to trap the animals back in May.Again the more they trap and bring in, the more they get paid to keep them for 7-10 days. And they were using any means to trap these animals so they would get paid some money. And the animals look so sad in the pics there that i dont think they are shown any love or kindness there, just ignored.

2.From a person who lives close by and knows the situation, " Our biggest problem here is not having a county pound, owned by the county and run by the county. Our board of supervisors turned down the opportunity a couple of years ago to be part of a tri-county shelter w/ King William and King & Queen. They were happy with paying the vet clinic tons of money every month to board/put animals down, instead of having their own housing for them and possibly finding homes for them. If you want to complain to someone, complain to them, we need help with that. We need a letter writing campaign to each board member with a proposal to fix this situation. The supervisors names can be found under the Tappahannock- Essex County Chamber of Commerce website. Bud Smith is the chairman. This is what we need the most around here.. to wake these people up in this county and alert them of this pound situation...I would bet that 95% of the population hasn't a

clue this even happens." For the last week,The Tapp pound has stopped using Petfinder and will not show any of us the animals there that need help. This has happened before. I have seen, thru crossposting, some beautiful sweet animals,Mothers, pups, beagles, loving hounds, happy yellow labs, the Injured in Pain, suffering shep/rottie that they let sit there without any medical help and then pts after he stayed his legal limit.....I have seen so many animals here be pts. I also know by trying to help three animals get out of there, 2 coonhounds and a yellow lab, that trying to help save animals there is like trying to find Bin Laden and bring him to the United States. I am exaggerating here but not exaggerating on what is going on there. I have also received many emails from people there who have tried to help the pound and the animals there and they have told me the pound is not Rescue Friendly, are rude to people, are mean to people and really do not seem

to care that the animals are PTS.They seem to care about the Vets clients but not the stray animals that no one pays for.It seems the only thing the vets and employees care about all their clients and probably this is what they are paid for.I know if I lived there and I knew what was going on there, I would never take my animals there as it seems all they care about is the all mighty dollar and they do not care that so many stray animals there are being killed by themselves. Solutions: 1.We need a letter writing campaign to each board member with a proposal to fix this situation. The supervisors names can be found under the Tappahannock- Essex County Chamber of Commerce website. Bud Smith is the chairman. This is what we need the most around here.. to wake these people up in this county and alert them of this pound situation...I would bet that 95% of the population

hasn't a clue this even happens." ALL INFO is at below website. Please call and write them. http://www.tappahannock-va.gov/official.htm 2.Contact all TV news stations, papers, etc in the area and let them know what is going on there. Also the vets clients need to know what is going on there.Animals lovers care about all animals not just their own.As the above person says, I would bet that 95% of the population hasn't a clue this even happens." It seems the squeaky wheel always gets the oil. Look at everyone who wrote letters about Franklin Co,NC,who had a very old gas chamber and gassed 95% of animals for years. Now no gassing and 80% are getting Rescued. If there were no News, no TV,no Internet, we would not know about all the suffering, pain, abuse, death out

there for people and animals. So we need to make this news so these animals will be helped. Even King William VA, who I think are wonderful, had many problems for years and so many people, rescues complained, wrote letters,it was sent over the Internet many times. They used to have 95% kill and now 95% Rescue. I am hoping we can all make the same thing happened for the animals here. Please write and call all the Board of Supervisors here and let them know how you feel and tell them this will effect their tourist industry etc as Vicki says below. Also please call the TV news stations there and contact their papers and ask them to run a major story here so that the pet owners here know what is going on at this pound. This should help the strays there also. in a letter to the Ed printed a couple of weeks ago..so far there has been no further comments on this sad issue of how the Essex Co pets are treated so poorly by this county...feel free to contact not only to the elected officals, very important, but also by sending letters to the ED.........if you are out of the area you can address it as a prospective tourist who will not spend your time or money in a backward community that has so little regard for it's animals. ........this is river country or as the locals say, "Rivah"--ughhh...obviously, so much emphasis on the Rappahannock river means tourism is a vital part of the economy and with RT 17 being so heavily traveled by RV's and folks heading north and south, many travellers go right thru Tappahannock , an scenic alternate route....... For those who have the passion for the pets you no longer see on petfinder due to the politics of all this nonsense that only hurts the animals , please take

action and voice your concerns. Essex County needs to come into the 21st Century and get a decent shelter or join with the other 2 counties who have the sense to do just that. Vicky - vandlent raptimes Monday, September 25, 2006 11:45 AM ESSEX COUNTY PETS NEED OUR HELP The recent front page article (Sept 20) on Essex Co. animal control will hopefully open the door to dialogue as to the sad plight of the animals in Essex county. What the article neglected to mention, is that the majority of the animals that animal control brings to the pound are killed. They have 7 days left to live if they have no collar and

10 days to live if they have a collar. People, please put collars with your name and phone number on your pets. This is the only way to know who to contact, otherwise your pets are killed. The huge numbers of innocent pets being killed in record numbers in our county is of great concern. King William county has only had to put down 19 animals since Jan 1, which includes injured animals. That's amazingly low because the employees working with pound pets work well with rescue groups. It has been brought to my attention that the Essex County Supervisors have refused to join with King William and King and Queen in a tri-county shelter. The plans are underway to benefit the pets in those counties while leaving Essex out of the equation. Doesn't it make sense that joining forces would be less expensive than the outdated method of having a pound located at a vet's office, which needs to conduct a business of it's own? Dogs and cats who

are abused or abandoned sit on death row through no fault of their own waiting for their human to retrieve them, and most never do. People prefer to keep their heads in the sand thinking pets sit there all cozy waiting for a loving forever home. Most pets are killed! I have seen the scared, confused faces of these sweet dogs and cats. We work hard to rescue, but the sad reality is that the county doesn't give these pets enough time nor is there the man power and training to work with rescue groups. Pets cannot be adopted out before their 7 or 10 days are up, hoping the owners come to get them, however, on the 7th or 10th day , they are killed! . Owners who turn their pets into pounds are dooming them to a death sentence because owner surrenders can legally be killed the same day since you don't have to wait to see if an owner comes forward. Owners who lose pets and do not go to the pound right away might find that their pet was

there but was killed because noone came during the specified legal hold time, which is too short in my mind. The rural mentality is that a dog will find it's way home without considering the dangers out there for them. Too many neglected dogs wander onto the busy highway, as noted not long ago by a passing tourist in her letter to this paper. Because our pound is located at a busy veterinary hospital, calls inquiring about rescues are limited. I don't fault the wonderful veterinarians there as they have served my pets well. It comes down to county policies and disregard for the welfare of pets beyond the single issue of rabies vaccines. Concerned animal lovers need to hold the supervisors more accountable in caring for our innocent animals. These elected officials have turned down a valuable opportunity to share the burden of animal welfare with two other counties. This appears to be a foolish fiscal mistake along with a lack of real compassion

for innocent dogs and cats. They would rather continue to pay an outragous bill each month to board and kill these animals. We as animal loving citizens must stand up to our board of supervisors and tell them we will no longer accept our tax dollars going towards the killing of innocent pets. Every single pet picked up by animal control could get a caring rescue IF only they had a few more days and someone to receive and return calls from rescue organizations. It was also mentioned that animal control is getting more calls about horses who do not have enough grazing areas. There will be alot less grazing areas, as well as less wooded areas for wildlife, if this wonderful rural county doesn't have a committed controlled growth policy. With all the animal lovers I have met here, surely Essex County can do better. Tell your elected supervisor today that you want a "no kill" shelter. There are model NO-KILL Shelters from which to learn.

Together we can make it happen here! A nice lady paid for his board until this Saturday 10/7/06. He has a broken tail and a hurt leg. If you can help him please contact us ASAP. PLEASE FORWARD AND CROSS POST OK.....I confess. I'm guilty (as are probably MANY of us) of assuming that, if a pet has made its way into a vet clinic versus an animal shelter, that it stands a better chance of being rescued or at least a decreased risk of being euthanized. Sadly, that just isn't the reality of the situation. The Tappahannock Vet Clinic in Virginia is literally the shelter for the county's animal control. As these dear souls don't "belong" to the clinic, the clinic is ALWAYS in urgent need of rescue or adoption for the numerous cats and dogs that end up there. Week after week highly adoptable and loving furbabies literally spend their last days on earth here. Posted below are the individual photos and some additional info about each of the cuddly cats and precious pooches that are now at the Tappahannock Vet Hospital.

Three dogs might have already been PTS as their last day was listed as today......sigh. Please check the Tappahannock Petfinder web site OFTEN as new pets are always being added (http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/VA338.html). If you have any questions about any of the dogs or cats that are listed there, please contact Sheila at the clinic by calling 804-443-2878 (preferably in the afternoons when the office is less busy).
