I have watched a video made on the 15th of September 2006 at the Sariyer Shelter showing the animals horrible captivity conditions. I was also reported the following facts: - stray animals were driven to the shelter in a van without any ventilation whereas Istanbul was suffering an extreme heat during the summer 2006 - a female captured during birth was dumped into a kennel. As the birth had already started, the female and the puppies died - animals are starving to death in order to avoid the employees to collect dog excrements - puppies and dogs are mixed up together in the same kennel Obviously, AIG is not fulfilling its contractual obligation with the Municipality. There is no justification for such a cruelty and neglect. Therefore I urge you to end the contract of AIG and to select a new organization which will provide the animals with adequate food, proper ventilation van, veterinary care, and kennels where undue stress and disturbance are minimized. By taking a kind position on this issue, your country will show that Turkey can also meet the European requirements concerning animals welfare. Yours sincerely, [Your name] [City] [Country] ****************** About SHKD : Sahipsiz Hayvanlari Koruma Dernegi (SHKD) is a Turkish registered animal welfare association, working since 1998 in Turkey with the purpose of persuading central government and local authorities to solve Turkey’s stray dog problem effectively, humanely and permanently [...] http://www.shkd.org/en/about.html Founder's Message : I first came to Turkey in 1980 and was always upset by the sight of frightened dogs wandering the streets and of their dead bodies littering Istanbul’s roads. However I only became actively involved with stray dogs in 1996 when my company, Futura Tekstil, moved to new premises in Beylikduzu. There were several stray dogs living in and around our new factory compound. Like any responsible factory owner I of course took these dogs to a vet, had them vaccinated, neutered and treated and instructed our employees to feed them. Unfortunately one of our dogs, Sunny, was too heavily pregnant to be aborted and gave birth to 4 puppies. (Sunny and her 2 surviving puppies now live at my house near Sapanca. The two other puppies and one of the fathers, Korsan, died recently – Korsan at the ripe old age for a Rottweiler of 13 years) [...] http://www.shkd.org/en/founder.html Stray dogs situation in Turkey : http://www.shkd.org/common/documents/solution.pdf
