PROTECT CALIFORNIA'S FRAGILE COASTS

 

Four years ago, BioGems Defenders helped persuade California officials to

establish a series of reserves to protect 175 square miles of spectacular

marine wildlands surrounding the Channel Islands. These islands harbor more

than 30 species of marine mammals, including elephant seals and blue whales.

At the time, the Bush administration promised to act quickly to create

additional reserves in federal waters surrounding the islands, which would

double the size of no-fishing zones to more than 300 square miles. After

several bureaucratic delays, federal officials have at last unveiled

proposed protections for the Channel Islands, and comments on the proposal

are due by October 10th.
