HELP STOP THE EU FROM SUBSIDISING WHALING

A new European Union tariff on a derivative from the Jojoba plant threatens

to create an incentive for the use of whale oil in cosmetics.

‘Jojoba Esters’ is used widely in cosmetics and provides a virtually

identical alternative to ‘spermaceti’, a derivative of whale oil. Next

month, the European Union will vote on imposing a 7.7% tariff on Jojoba

Esters which, if adopted, will create an incentive for the cosmetics

industry to use spermaceti in its products on which the tariff is zero. This

will increase pressure to overturn the whaling moratorium and the ban on

trade in whale products.

WDCS expects the whaling industry to support the Jojoba Tariff. The whales

need your help to fight it.

Please write to trade representatives in Europe, urging them to vote against

the Jojoba Tariff. To send an e-mail now, please go to:

DRIVE HUNTS BEGIN IN JAPAN - JOIN US IN PROTEST

The annual dolphin drive hunts that occur in Taiji, Japan have begun a month

early, with the round-up of around 25 dolphins on the 6th September.

Every year, up to 2,000 dolphins are killed in such hunts. Rounded up by

speedboats at sea and herded into a bay or harbour, the dolphins are

surrounded by nets and then slaughtered, or selected alive for the lucrative

aquarium industry.

Please join us on September 20th at a peaceful demonstration outside the

Japanese embassy in London, or Washington. To find out more, please go to:

programme.

Lost ‘Thames Whales’ die despite heroic rescue effort

Two northern bottlenose whales were found stranded on the east coast of the

UK, near Skegness in August. This is the same deep sea species as the whale

that came up the River Thames in January this year.

Greenland increases narwhal quotas.

The Greenland Home Rule Government has announced preliminary quotas for

2006/7 that ignore the urgent advice of experts to immediately reduce

over-hunting of these dramatically declining stocks.

Intelligent dolphins?

New research which suggests that dolphins are not intelligent has been

dismissed by marine mammal experts as flawed.
