'Migrant Bird Hunting Season begins in Italy

The hunting season opened on 17 September 2006. Some 70,000 hunters are permitted to hunt 40 different bird species until the end of the season on 31 January 2007.These include Skylark Alauda arvensis, Ruff Philomachus pugnax, Water Rail Rallus aquaticus und Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus. The annual bag of the officially huntable species is about 17 million birds, the most sought-after being the Song Thrush Turdus philomelos with 7.7 million birds shot. In addition an estimated 10 to 20 million birds are shot illegally. Conservationists had one success to their credit before the season began. Several regions had applied to have the season extended by an earlier start of 2 weeks (from 2 September). An Italian organisation secured a court injunction against a local administrative court decision to begin the season early. The Committee Against Bird Slaughter’s (CABS – www.komitee.de ) bird protection camps, with its partners LAC, CSA, WWF and LIPU begin in Lombardy on 30 September 2006.Posted by Proact on behalf ofAlexander HeydKomitee gegen den Vogelmord'

Slaughter of endangered bird species in Romania

The escalating hunting of migrating birds, especially by foreign hunters, the widespread shooting of song birds with automatic weapons and using of electronic decoy devices, has made Romania into a death trap for European migranting birds. The state earns enormous amounts of foreign currency, amounting to millions of Euro, from well-heeled foreign hunters mostly from Italy and Germany. This shameful trade affects highly endangered birds such as the Ruff (Philomachus pugnax). Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) and the Skylark (Alauda arvensis).

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Join the protest against this auctioning of Europe’s birds to the highest bidder and send a protest mail to Romania’s President Basescu. Demand that he use his office to ensure that Romania fully implement the EU bird protection guidelines before it accedes to the EU in 2007 and ends the sale of hunting licences to foreigners(email link and text below):

Opreste vânatoarea la pasari migratoare în România - stop hunting of migrant birds in Romania

Cu stima Dear President Basescu, Despite Romania's pledge to implement the EU bird protection guidelines before its accession to the European Union, your government still authorises the shooting of endangered species, the hunting of returning migrants in spring as well as the use of automatic weapons for bird hunting. Even more scandalous is the fact that the Romanian government is directly involved in the marketing of this gruesome bird slaughter through its sale of hunting licences to foreign hunters permitting them to kill song and migrant birds. I therefore demand that you use your office to ensure the full implementation of the bird protection guidelines NOW - before your country's accession to the European Union. Yours faithfully, (Name and address)

THE BARBARIC USE OF STONE CRUSH TRAPS IN FRANCE MUST AGAIN BE BANNED

French Environment Minister authorises the reintroduction of stone crush traps Back to the Stone Age

Since November 2005 thousands of songbirds may once again be trapped and crushed to death under stone slabs - and subsequently eaten as delicacies. The traps, set out on the limestone plateaux east of Avignon, are among the most brutal instruments in the European hunter's arsenal.

MAIL TO MINISTER NELLY OLIN

Dear Minister, With your express authorisation, thousands of song birds have been killed by stone crush traps on the limestone plateaux west of the Cevenne National Park since November 2005. The legalisation of such a indiscriminate, cruel and practically uncontrollable hunting method is, from the point of view of species and animal protection, a scandal and I condemn this practice unreservedly. I demand that you ban this outdated and barbaric form of bird trapping immediately and ensure that the EU bird protection guidelines are rigorously implemented in France, Sincerely,

[your name and address]
