Guest guest
Friends of the Earth Take Action: Bush Plan Threatens Amazon Rainforest! http://action.foe.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=5183 Dear Friend: Right now, the Bush administration is pushing Congress to approve a free trade agreement that will put the Amazon rainforest on the chopping block. The Peru Free Trade Agreement will promote harmful trade and allow large-scale illegal logging in the rainforest. Tell Congress to protect the Amazon. The Amazon rainforest in Peru is threatened by the widespread illegal logging of mahogany, an endangered species that is central to the rainforest ecosystem. Logging is destroying critical forest habitat for the giant river otter and other endangered species, and indigenous workers are often coerced into forced labor in illegal logging operations. Most of the timber harvested from the rainforest is exported to the United States in violation of an international agreement on trade in endangered species. The Peru Free Trade Agreement will do nothing to halt this illegal logging and destruction of the rainforest. Congress will consider the agreement this fall. Now is the time to stop this anti-environmental agreement and save the rainforest! Let your senators and representatives know that you don’t want Congress to trade away the rainforest. Take action and send a letter today! Thank you.
