" TORO DE LA VEGA " = A CRUEL TRADITION TO ABOLISH

 

 

The second Tuesday of September, in Tordesillas (Valladolid, a province

of Castilla y Leon, Spain), a bull will be tortured and killed in a

" spectacle " called " Toro de la Vega " , in which a crowd, armed with

medieval spears, chase a bull through a field, and stab any part of his

body with the spears, until he is killed. In the 2000 festival, the

animal had a spear through his body for 35 minutes until he died, while

he was stabbed with more spears.

What is more, once the bull has been tortured, these savage people cut

his ears and his testicles, and they offer them to the Virgin!!

The defenders of this outrage justify it saying that it belongs to

Tordesillas´ tradition. Nevertheless, this cannot be justified. Only

barbarous people can justify this kind of atrocities. In Africa

extirpating the clitoris to women is also a tradition, and that does not

mean that it has to be defended or maintained, or that it is correct and

fair.

In spite of the intense legal pressure against this horrific

" tradition " , carried out for years by ANPBA in Spain, this spectacle has

been finally legalised by the government of Castilla y Leon, after

petition by the Tordesillas Town Hall, being declared " traditional

spectacle " , and now this horror cannot be taken to court. This is why

INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE IS ESSENTIAL.

Please, send your letters to the Spanish authorities, cc. to the

associations behind this protest, " Asociacion Nacional para la

Proteccion y el Bienestar de los Animales " (ANPBA), from Spain, and

" Movimiento Anti-Touradas de Portugal " (MATP), from Portugal.

Constituye un crimen horrendo declarar " tradicional " un espectáculo en

el que una multitud de personas, armadas con lanzas medievales,

persiguen a un toro por el campo, clavándoselas en cualquier parte del

cuerpo hasta matarlo.

SOLICITO la prohibición inmediata de este salvaje martirio y muerte de

un animal y me uno a la propuesta realizada por la Asociación Nacional

para la Protección y el Bienestar de los Animales (ANPBA) de declarar a

Tordesillas " Ciudad Non Grata " mientras persista en defender este brutal

espectáculo.

Es digno de resaltar aquí que el espectáculo ha sido condenado como " Una

Salvajada " por el 49% del público que ha respondido a la encuesta de una

Web de Tordesillas que promociona dicho espectáculo, mientras que sólo

una minoría (16%) lo defiende.

Espero recibir alentadoras noticias.

It is a horrible crime to declare " traditional " a spectacle in which a

crowd, armed with medieval spears, chase a bull in a field, while

spearing him to death.

I urge you to proclaim an immediate ban on this savage torture and death

of an animal. I join the proposal made by the Asociacion Nacional para

la Proteccion y el Bienestar de los Animales (ANPBA) in declaring

Tordesillas as " Ciudad Non Grata " whilst they continue defending this

brutal spectacle.

It would be worth mentioning that this spectacle has been condemned as

" An Atrocity " by 49% of the public responding to a survey in a web from

Tordesillas which promotes this spectacle, and that only a minority

(16%) defends it.

I await to hear hopeful news.

Nevertheless, we believe this is not enough to make an end of it.

Because of that, we would be really grateful if you attended in

September with us to Tordesillas and protested against this cruel

tradition.

Last year we went too, and we wish this year much more people will join

the cause. The Spanish authorities have to listen to us!!
