Guest guest
Hello! I have a BIG problem to help solve, with Spiny Iguanas on Boca Island, off the coast of Florida. There is a group SpinyIguana There are the following web sites to help generate interest, and information http://www.SpinyIguana.org and we also have http://www.SpinyIguana.com we have both so we would not miss someone by going to the wrong place. Both the web addresses go to the same place. Here is our problem in a nut shell: There are 10,000 Spiny Iguanas on this Island, and the folks in Boca Island can't get along with THAT many Spiny Iguanas running around. So there a folks doing horendous things to the Iguanas to try to get rid of them. There is a section of people who love them, and a section of people who do not like them, so there is a sort of resident war going on as how to handle this problem. The National Reptile Foundation has been called in to help. http://www.NationalReptileFoundation.org We created the spiny iguana web site, and the group to help with this situation. I have joined several groups to help spread the word, and to ask this question.... DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ??? on how to go about this problem, in the best way possible for the Iguanas. The best Greenest Ideas will be the ones we strive for. Hopefully we can adopt some of the younger ones out to adopting people who will understand what they have just adopted.... A WILD Spiny Iguana. NOT too many people will be able to really handle one, so we will not adopt out the adults, who COULD take off a few fingers IF they wished to. We are looking for ZOOS to adopt a small colony, and keep them wild in an educational display. We are looking for any other solution ideas. there IS talk of Euthanizing the ones they catch that are NOT adoptable, Some are suggesting using the Iguanas for food. Some are just wanting ALL iguanas to be dead iguanas, and some are wanting to get the Alpha males neutered. There is the BIG debate on what is the most humane way to Euthanize the ones they will euthanize. We have an incentive. There is a $50,000 GRANT available IF we can figure out how to solve this problem in a MOST GREEN HUMANE WAY. We know we cant save them ALL, but we are sure going to give it a good shot! IF there is ANYONE that knows IGUANAS, These are NOT your GREEN iguanas, Peacefull and veggie eaters.... These are WILD and they eat meat, as well as veggies. on a scale of 1-10 they are a 10 as far as aggression goes. Some may be kinder than others, but you NEED to be aware that this is NOT your ordinary " pet " Lizard. Thank you for reading this, IF you can help out in ANY way.... Please join us. Thank you, Sincerely, Lisa C. Founder of National Reptile Foundation info
