Guest guest
Dear Friend, I wanted to give you an update on the Greenpeace sponsored expedition to the Arcitic! The explorers will raise awareness of global warming and the threat is poses to polar bears. Read more below. Best, Nick ************** I’m writing you from a small tent, sheltered from the Arctic elements, after a long day of climbing up and down pressure ridges of ice – some up to 30 feet tall – hauling 90 pounds of gear. Lonnie and I are exhausted. We covered 3 and half miles today, making steady progress North against some of the harshest ice conditions we’ll face. We’ve been on the ice for just over a week, and so far we’ve covered almost 40 miles toward our final destination: the North Pole. The ice is so thick and massive here, it’s hard to imagine that in just 50 years, it could be gone in summer. That means no more polar bears - which by the way can't be too far away from us right now, because we just ran across some Arctic fox tracks today. Up here, where there's a fox, a polar bear is near. And it’s polar bears that we’re here to rescue, from a threat they can’t even perceive: global warming. But they’re already feeling the effects of it. Despite being strong swimmers, polar bear deaths from drownings are on the rise, as the sea ice they attempt to swim between is rapidly melting. That’s why this journey is about so much more than reaching a destination. It’s about showing the world the real impacts of global warming, and saving the polar bear. We’re just two guys from Minnesota, trying to make a difference, but we can’t do it without your help. We started this expedition with enough food and supplies for 40 days. It will be 111 more days before we reach the North Pole, and to make it safely, we’re relying on two food and supply drops totaling $47,000 each. Can you help fund our expedition to save the polar bear and show the world the impacts of global warming? We’ll need our first food and supply drop when we reach about 87 degrees of North. At our current pace, we should be there in 40 days. Will you be there for us? Will you help ensure the success of our expedition, and help us fight for the polar bear by making a generous gift now? Your donation will help us reach our destination and accomplish our true mission: saving polar bears. This is a dangerous and precedent-setting expedition, and we need your support. Well, we also need to rest up to do it all again tomorrow, so good night. I’ll write again soon. Sincerely, Eric Larsen Arctic Explorer p.s. I’ve sent home some pictures of our trip so far.
