Earth Day is April 22 and the Rainforest Alliance will be at Grand Central Station in New York on both Friday April 21 and Saturday April 22 along with more than 50 environmental companies, non-profit organizations and Earth Day New York sponsors. Stop by the Rainforest Alliance booth to check out samples of our certified chocolate and coffee and to learn more about the Rainforest Alliance's education, agriculture, forestry and tourism programs. Show Your Support! This Earth Day we encourage you to look at the challenges and opportunities for environmental stewardship that lie ahead. Because the world’s population exerts tremendous and growing pressure on the earth’s resources and landscapes, the Rainforest Alliance has pioneered market-based solutions that transform land-use practices in agriculture, forestry and tourism -- harnessing the power of these three industries to support the health and livelihood of land, wildlife and workers. We already have plans to expand our model of sustainability to new locations, new sectors and new products. With your support, we will turn these plans into reality. Imagine a day when all of our paper and other wood products come from sustainably managed forests, and when farmers around the world are able to produce crops responsibly. This Earth Day, please help us make an investment in the future. Make a secure online donation, call us at (888) MY-EARTH, or mail a check to 665 Broadway, Suite 500, New York, NY 10012. A gift to the Rainforest Alliance is the gift of cleaner air, water and soil for the generations to come; it is the gift of sustainable livelihoods for families around the world. Their commitment to sustainable coffee and cocoa production proves, as the Rainforest Alliance’s executive director Tensie Whelan explains, "that the concept of sustainability, once limited to niche markets, is entering the mainstream." In 2005, Kraft purchased 13 million pounds of coffee from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Peru. They also recently committed to integrating certified cocoa into their chocolate supply. In September 2005, Kraft bought its first monthly purchase of 50 tons of cocoa beans from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Ecuador. Kraft not only has plans for further growth in their purchasing, they are also committed to the areas and the farmers that produce these products. By partnering with the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), Kraft is working to train agronomists and help farmers work to meet certification standards. Showing that sustainability can be integrated into a company’s business practices and that coffee and cocoa farming can be environmentally friendly, equitable and profitable are both at the heart of the Rainforest Alliance’s mission. Kraft’s support and dedication to buying sustainably produced goods is helping to grow overall demand and expand the global market for certified products. You can enjoy the fruits of this partnership simply by picking up some Rainforest Alliance Certified Kraft coffees such as Kenco, Jacques Vabre, Gevalia and Splendid in the United Kingdom, France, Sweden and Italy. Also look for well-known brands such as Maxwell House, Jacobs and Carte Noire which are blended with certified beans. Check Out Chocolate Math! Don't tell me your age; you probably would tell a falsehood anyway-but the Hershey Man will know! This is pretty neat. Work this out as you read... 1. First, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than one but less than ten) 2. Multiply this number by 2. 3. Add 5. 4. Multiply the number by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator. 5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1756. If you haven't add 1755. 6. Now subtract the year in which you were born -- use all four digits. You should have a three digit number. The first digit is your original number (i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week). The next two numbers are your age! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!) 2006 is the only year this will work, so spread around the sweet chocolate math while it lasts! Celebrate with Us!
