Every Easter, well-meaning people adopt rabbits in a misguided attempt to enhance the holiday festivities. Few people research rabbits long enough to discover children and rabbits are not always a good match. Sadly, for the rabbits, when the novelty of Easter wears off, they often find themselves surrendered to a shelter or worse – abandoned to the woods.

Enter your favourite furry friend in the ultimate pet popularity contest – winners will be featured in the 2007 edition of the Society’s calendar. Our calendar is sent to more than 50,000 households, providing the kind of exposure that can only be achieved if Snoopy’s people are your pets’ publicists. Be Kind to Animals Week promotes responsible pet care; honours the outstanding contributions made by people on behalf of animals as well as the heroic acts of animals; and celebrates the importance of animals in our lives. This year, Mayor Miller has proclaimed the week May 7 – 13 as Be Kind To Animals Week. Click here to read the Mayor’s proclamation (PDF).

Note: The Toronto Humane Society’s annual awards ceremony has been postponed because of the ongoing Cat Sky House construction as well as the Teamster’s Local 419 strike of animal care workers. Check the website for future updates.

Recently, The Toronto Humane Society’s president, Tim Trow, implored the government for help in stopping the Canadian Seal Hunt. This campaign was launched with an e-postcard that was sent to our supporters. To date, over 1,500 people have responded by sending letters to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Geoff Regan.

In Canada there is no mention of Police Service Animals anywhere in the Criminal Code of Canada, therefore purposefully killing a police dog, horse or other active member police animal comes with NO additional charges, unlike many States and Countries that do protect their Police Service Animals. Letters have been written to the Canadian Federal Government, including the Prime Minister’s office, regarding a proposal to amend the Criminal Code of Canada giving Police Service Animals the much needed protection they require, under the law. The proposed amendment was nicknamed "BRIGADIER’S LAW" and is a very important issue.

For information about Brigadier and to add your name to the Petition, please click HERE.

On October 1, 2005 The Toronto Humane Society began construction of its new Cat Sky House. The addition to the second floor will house an additional 280 cats, and when the Cat Sky House is complete in 2006, the new facility will provide cats and kittens with roomier housing, better air quality and lots of natural light.

The Toronto Humane Society is very grateful for all the support received thus far, but there is still much more work to be done. Please consider making your donation to the Cat Sky House today. The animals will thank you!

Biggie – The Cat Who Raps! (By Shana and Glenn)

On the Monday of the May 24 holiday weekend, 2005, we went to The Toronto Humane Society and found Biggie. He was four-years-old at the time and had been surrendered because his previous owners were moving. They had named him after the rapper, Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G.). That first day in the shelter he hugged us with his front paws when we picked him up so we decided to give him—and rap music—a try ...

Q: Now that spring has sprung, my cat meows at the window. I feel bad, should I let him out for some fresh air?

A: No way! Indoor cats are not missing out on outdoor action. Indoor cats are safe from the dangers lurking outside; altercations with wild animals, cruel pranksters, injuries, pet thieves, hit and runs, and parasites such as fleas, ticks, and worms. Also, indoor cats are spared the pain and distress of deadly viruses.

There is no way to ensure the safety of an outdoor cat. Do not be misled – being outside is not great for cats! Click HERE for more (PDF).
