SAVE PUBLIC ACCESS TV UPDATE

Tune in Monday, November 7th for a National Snowstorm!

Take Action! Your Voice Counts!

On Monday, November 7th at 9PM Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) will stop airing regular programming on all our channels, and for sixty seconds will air nothing but “snow”.

This is our part of a national “snowstorm” to show viewers coast-to-coast what TV would be like without public access TV. Access centers from the five boroughs of NYC will be participating in this snowstorm, as will hundreds more from Maine to Hawaii, and from New Mexico to Oregon.

Currently there’s legislation in Washington that could jeopardize the future of Public Access TV. This snowstorm is a part of our efforts, and the efforts of public access TV stations around the country, to show what would be lost if anti-access legislation is passed.

Tell you friends and family to tune in for this historic event, and tell them to call their elected officials to let them know Public Access TV matters in our community.

Go to: http://mnn.org/saveaccess/index.html – to fill out electronic letters we will send to our elected representatives. (for producers with limited Internet access, we can also supply postcards to distribute to your friends and family)

Don’t take Public Access TV for granted! Your Voice Counts!

More About the Bills that Threaten Public Access & What You Can Do:

PUBLIC ACCESS TV IS UNDER ATTACK!

There is legislation making its way through Congress that you need to know about. It threatens to dismantle Public Access TV. This legislation will affect not only Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN), but also all of the other Public Access TV centers across the nation.

What this could mean to you and other producers is no access to equipment, training or the end of access programming all together. We know that your show means a lot to you and your viewers. We know that you value Public Access.

ABOUT THE BILLS...

The Senate “Broadband Investment and Consumer Choice Act” (S.1504) and House and Senate “Video Choice Act of 2005” (H.R.3146 & S.1349) could end funding for the creation of programming, for training, for access to equipment and studios. They could strip MNN of channel space on cable TV ending your ability reach the public. These Bills could end free and democratic public communication in the Borough of Manhattan and at every other Public Access TV center around the country

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SAVE MNN AND PUBLIC ACCESS TV:

Take the first step and visit the website at: http://mnn.org/saveaccess/ we’ve created, that enables you to sign on to several letters addressed to local elected officials asking them to oppose these bills.

Please refer your viewers to this site and encourage them to act. Tell them to go to: http://mnn.org/saveaccess/. It will only take 30 seconds but it could make a huge difference in the defending Public Access! You will also find a PSA to download and use in your show (also available in the Production Dept. at MNN) and talking points to help you discuss the issues on your show.
