Guest guest
According to a recent Centers for Disease Control report, one out of every six children born in the U.S. has potentially dangerous levels of mercury in his or her body. That's 630,000 babies a year at risk of brain damage, problems with language development, and balance and coordination deficiencies, all because the Bush administration won't tell coal-burning power plants to clean up their act. Greenpeace thinks this is unacceptable - so we're launching a campaign to clean up our air and water. You can help this campaign while determining your own level of mercury exposure by purchasing a simple self-test kit online at: http://www.greenpeaceusa.org/mercury. These kits will be sold at cost as part of the largest study of mercury exposure in human bodies ever conducted. In partnership with the University of North Carolina - Asheville, we will be testing hair samples from 10,000 people throughout the country in an effort to draw attention to this public health crisis and to determine exactly how bad the damage is. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to have their own hair tested and to help organize testing events. Nearly half the mercury contamination in the country comes from antiquated coal-fired power plants that have escaped regulation for years under a grandfather clause. The Clinton EPA put rules in place to reduce mercury emissions from these plants by 90%. The Bush EPA is not only trying to delay implementing the rules for another ten years, they want to water them down to allow for even more mercury emissions. Meanwhile, the state environmental agencies and the US Food and Drug Administration are busy issuing advisories warning women of childbearing age not to eat fish because the mercury contamination problem is so bad. By taking a test, you can help pressure the Bush administration to make the switch from polluting fossil fuels, to healthier, renewable energy. We'll use the results from our report to hammer home the point – fossil fuels are not healthy for children or our environment! Again, the link is: http://www.greenpeaceusa.org/mercury. Please help us protect women and children from mercury by getting tested. Greenpeace, our waterways, and 630,000 babies thank you! _______________________________ Declare Yourself - Register online to vote today! http://vote.
