Changes Would Save State Money

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Pressure from animal activists convinced Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Friday afternoon to change his stance about repealing a state law that requires animal shelters to hold stray dogs and cats for up to six days before killing them.

The idea drew the wrath of animal lovers outside the capitol Friday. And just a few hours after the protest, the governor pulled his suggestion, giving two different explanations.

 

"We have reinstated the six-day waiting period on dogs because I realized last night that there was a mistake that I made on the budget," Schwarzenegger said.
