Please send those letters. I think that unless you live in California, or one of the closer States, today (6/9) is a little too late to send postal mail. Even if the judge receives it the day of the sentencing, he probably won't even see it until after the hearing. Please be polite and respectful when writing. Thanks, Rita **PLEASE CROSS POST ** **Letters needed to the judge**PETA action alert: Help Put California Bird Beater in Prison http://www.peta.org/alert/automation/AlertItem.asp?id=1040 Please respond by June 9!!! "This man exerted a tremendous amount of rage on an innocent animal." That was how a California prosecutor summed up 53-year-old Anthony James Ellis' March 2003 drunken attack on his macaw, Johnny. In a purported act of "self defense" against the bird, Ellis held Johnny upside down and repeatedly punched him before slamming him headfirst against a boat. The macaw's resulting injuries reportedly included a fractured leg and broken beak, as well as internal trauma. Ellis' reported attempts to regain custodyof the battered bird were denied-Johnny has since been adopted. On April 27 of this year, Ellis was convicted of two felony counts of cruelty to animals. He now faces up to three years in prison and is scheduled to appear before Judge Geoffrey T. Glass for sentencing on June 11. For more information on the case, please http://www.smdailyjournal.org/article.cfm?issue=04-28-04 & storyID=30309Please let Judge Glass know that, in the interests of preserving the safety of the community-including both human and nonhuman members-it is imperativeto impose severe sentences on animal abusers. Politely ask that Ellis be sentenced to three years of incarceration and ordered to undergo a mandatory mental health evaluation, followed by psychological counseling and anger-management classes at his own expense. To ensure that no more animals fall prey to his malicious and violent tendencies, respectfully urge His Honor to bar Ellis from contact with animals for the maximum period allowable by law and to see that any animals who still remain in his charge be immediately located and seized. It is imperative that all correspondence be dignified and polite so as not to discredit our campaign. The Honorable Geoffrey T.
