The wild horses have freely roamed in the Kisatchie National Forest, parts of which are used by the Army for training exercises and weapons firing. Although the horses have never interfered with these military exercises, Bob Odom, Commissioner of the Louisiana Departmentof Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF), has asked the Army to kill them off anyway or at a minimum, round them up and sell them. Odom has a long record of anti-animal sentiments, having publicly supported cockfighting and the development of canned hunt operations in his state. Now Odom is capitalizing on hysteria and misinformation about Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) to launch his latest assault on the Kisatchie wild horses. Although EIA is a serious disease in horses, its potential for transmission is extremely low in any case, and especially here where thewild horses are not in close contact with privately-owned horses. Even the USDA> 's chief equine veterinarian Dr. Tim Cordes has called EIA a disease of low transmissibility that requires a lot of exposure between animals to be transmitted. And a test conducted a few years ago of six capturedKitsachie horses showed that none of them were EIA-positive. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please contact the Army by this Thursday, May 20, and ask them to allow the Kisatchie wild horses to roam free. Time is short, so please send your quickemails today.1.
