McCullough was charged in November 2003 after authorities received information that McCullough was keeping a baby deer in the pen with the two dogs.McCullough was convicted Friday after testimony from several witnesses, including Lucedale veterinarian Karl Smith."Both ears were chewed off all the way to the skull," Smith said.Smith said the fawn was treated with antibiotics for several weeks, but a few days after her bandages were removed she

died. Smith said the cause of death was head trauma.McCullough denied putting the deer in the pen.He testified that the deer was sick and he nursed it back to health. He said the deer just hung around and jumped into the pen with the dogs on several occasions.Justice Court Judge Joe Beard sentenced McCullough to six months in jail, but suspended most of the sentence. McCullough will serve 30 days.He was fined $100 for possession of a spotted fawn and possession of a deer in an enclosure and $1,000 on the animal cruelty charge.
