Guest guest
Taken from: http://www.ydeaglescry.com/ The Eagle Alliance was formed by the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve and the National Wildlife Federation in response to the sulfide mining exploration taking place in the Upper Peninsula of michigan - particularly with the current exploration by Kennecott Exploration and Mining Company at the headwaters of the Salmon Trout River in northern Marquette County Sulfide mining is very different from the iron mining that occurs in the Negaunee/Ishpeming Tilden and Empire mines, where metals occur in oxide ore bodies, and in the Copper Country, where much of the metal is in the native, or uncombined, form. The mining that is being considered on the Yellow Dog Plains, and in other areas in the U.P., deals with metals that are in sulfide ores. When these ores are extracted they come in contact with air, water and bacteria which starts the sulfides in the minerals oxidizing, creating sulfuric acid and acid mine drainage (AMD). Acid mine drainage contains not only acid, but also dissolved metals that can be toxic. Oxide ore bodies (like those in the local iron mines) do not generate this acid mine drainage.
