>Press Release 12-11-2003

>

>Hunting issue raised in European Parliament-AD

>

>Alternattiva Demokratika-The Green Party welcomed the questions made by

>Liberal MEP Chris Davies about the hunting situation in Malta. These

>questions were addressed to the European Commission and will be discussed

in

>the environment committee meeting, which will meet between the 1st and 2nd

>December.

>The text of the parliamentary question made by the liberal MEP is the

>following:

>

> " The Accession Treaty signed by Malta on 16th April 2003 commits Malta to

>the full transposition and implementation of the Birds Directive

79/409/EEC

>by 1 May 2004. Malta revised its laws in January 2003. However these laws

do

>not fully comply with the Birds Directive. The Maltese law is not

consistent

>with the Directive as it allows spring hunting and bird trapping, beyond

the

>transition agreement obtained by Malta for the trapping of finches in the

>period defined by article 7(4) of the Birds Directive.

>

> " The illegal hunting of protected birds is a serious, widespread problem

in

>Malta. According to the Accession Treaty, the EU urges Malta to take all

>necessary measures, such as ensuring adequate administrative capacity and

>sufficient legal instruments to curb illegal hunting, and hunting and

>capture methods prohibited under the acquis. What is the Commission's

>assessment of Malta's progress as regards the implementation of the Birds

>Directive?  How will the Commission ensure that Malta complies with the

>Birds Directive from the date of accession? What action is the Commission

>taking to assist Malta in its attempts to control illegal hunting? "

>

>AD's spokesperson on EU affairs and secretary general of the European

Greens

>Dr. Arnold Cassola reiterated AD's commitment to raise the hunting issue

in

>European institutions.

>

> " Reckless hunting has a negative inpact on our economic income from

tourism,

>since 13 % of tourists are shocked by hunters' behaviour. AD will continue

>working, through its role in the European Greens and its excellent

>relationship with other parliamentary groups to ensure that Malta fully

>abides with the EU directives on hunting.  AD will continue to work for

the

>abolition of hunting in spring " .
