WHALE QUOTA FOR MAKAH MADE OFFICIAL

--------------------------------

Peninsula Daily News

Port Angeles, Washington

December 14, 2001

NEAH BAY- The National Marine Fisheries Service on Thursday announced in the

Federal Register a whaling quota for the Makah Indian tribe that allows the

tribe to harvest five gray whales a year through 2002. The aboriginal

subsistence whaling quota was reinstated after the Fisheries Service issued

an environmental assessment this year determining that a take of five whales

would not affect the gray whale population.

The Fisheries Service will apply for a new quota from the International

Whaling Commission next year to span 2003 to 2007.

COMMENT LETTERS: ONE MORE TIME!

--------------------------------

Are you scratching your head (again), trying to figure out how to respond

(again) to the new Makah EA? Are you a bit disturbed and distraught over the

fact that NMFS ignored your concerns (again), as well as the 97% of

Americans who took the time to write a letter opposing the hunt LAST time?

Are you dismayed that NMFS has blown off every comment, every letter, every

question, every query about their shameful conduct in shoving this hunt down

your throat (again)?

You're not alone. Again.

We would like to direct your attention to the response letter just crafted

by Sea Shepherd International. You can find it at:

http://www.seashepherd.com/issues/whales/makah121401.html We guarantee it

will inspire you to new heights of letter-writing!

Remember, comment letters must be received by NMFS no later than January 15,

2002. We are asking you to take a deep breath, heave a sigh and take the

time to respond once more. According to the clowns at NMFS who run this

particular freak show, they are " particularly interested in any new

information on the affected environment or environmental consequences that

has become available since the last analysis was completed. " Sure they are.

But is is vital to get your comment letters into the public record, and that

is why we are asking you to DO IT ONE MORE TIME!

Please free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns on how to

respond. We'll try and help any way we can. It's important to remember that

while NMFS may ignore you and lie to you, we never will. That is a promise!

The brand-new, shiny Makah EA notice is posted on the NMFS website at:

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/prot--res/prot--res.html under " New Arrivals. " NOW

LET'S GET TO WORK!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

------------------------

" For some marine mammals, all it takes is a few hunters refusing to act

responsibly to put a stock at risk. "
