(AP) Scientists were unsuccessful again on Thursday in an attempt to free a right whale of marine line caught in its jaw. Thursday morning rescuers took their first close-up look at the entangled right whale since he returned to New England waters this week and found that its infection has worsened. ''He's noticeably thinner, and the wound itself is starting to gape,'' said National Marine Fisheries Service spokeswoman Teri Frady. Whale experts reached the North Atlantic right whale, named ''Churchill,'' about 100 miles east of Provincetown Thursday, at almost exactly the spot where they first put a tracking buoy around him on June 9. In mid-July the whale left Massachusetts waters and headed to Nova Scotia. It returned to the waters off Provincetown earlier this week. ''So 82 days and 4,470 miles later we're right back where we started with him,'' Frady said. Frady said the scientists also noticed the whale was covered with cyamids, or whale lice. ''Typically you'll see a buildup of whale lice when the skin is in very poor condition or there's a wound,'' Frady said. Scientists believe the infection caused by the marine line jammed in its jaw is terminal, Frady said. ''It appears we were right in our initial assessment that he couldn't live with the entanglement, because it hasn't improved,'' she said. The endangered whale, one of only about 300 left in the world, has moved in and out of U.S. and Canadian waters since he was first spotted entangled in the line in early June. Scientists have made several unsuccessful attempts to remove the line. Frady said scientists haven't decided whether to make another rescue attempt.
