One of those differences will be the section on food irradiation labeling. Two of the conference committee members will be key to preserving the integrity of food irradiation labeling Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). These two individuals need to hear from us before they decided the final language to this appropriations bill. Sample Letter and Contact information are enclosed below. PUBLIC COMMENTS DEADLINE: AUGUST 14th, 2001 ! Ignoring public opinion and a multi-year public process, the Bush Administration has ordered the National Park Service to re-open its decision to phase out snowmobiles in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Please tell the Park Service to uphold the existing policy -- http://www.wilderness.org/takeaction/?step=2 & item=573 ADMINISTRATION BACKPEDALING This past July, the Bush Administration backed away from its commitment to protect Yellowstone and Grand Teton from the damage caused by snowmobiles, by settling a lawsuit brought by the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association. As a result, the Park Service has been ordered to re-open its decision to phase-out snowmobiles -- and reconsider speculative advances in " cleaner " and " quieter " snowmobile technology. To do this, the National Park Service is required to prepare a " Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement " (SEIS) to solicit " more public comment. " Industry's strong endorsement of this process confirms the Bush Administration's determination to keep snowmobiles *in* the park. This maneuver sets aside 10 years of scientific analysis, a 3-year process to collect public input, 22 public hearings, and the involvement of 65,000 people who took time to become involved it the process. PUBLIC COMMENTS DEADLINE: AUGUST 14, 2001 TAKE ACTION NOW : Please write to the Park Service (sample letter below) and tell them to : PLEASE UPHOLD the existing policy to phase-out snowmobiles from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. CONTACT INFORMATION : Winter Use Plan, Superintendent's Office Grand Teton National Park, P.O. Drawer 170 Moose, WY 83012 EMAIL: yell_winter_use (@nps.gov ) ----------------- SAMPLE LETTER: **It's important to PERSONALIZE YOUR MESSAGE so the Park Service counts them as individual responses. ** Remember to include your name and address. Subject : Winter Use Plan: Public Comments for the Record Dear " Winter Use Plan " , I care deeply about the future of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I object to the National Park Service's plan to conduct a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on winter use of snowmobiles in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. I believe that in 10 years of study, scientists and professional land managers proved that snowmobiles are harming wildlife and threatening public health and safety. Specifically I object to the NPS plan to conduct a Supplemental EIS on winter use at Yellowstone and Grand Teton because ten years of study have proven that snowmobiles harm wildlife and threaten public health and safety. I therefore ask you to uphold the existing plan and begin to implement the well-researched decision of the Park Service to phase out snowmobiles from these parks. COMMENTS DEADLINE: AUGUST 20, 2001 THE HEARING on this resolution is expected to be on August 21st. California Assemblyman Paul Koretz has introduced a resolution in the state legislature calling for an end to taxpayer subsidized aerial gunning Programs nationwide. Your help is needed to get this passed by the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee. Each year, government-hired " aerial gunners " shoot and kill more than 30,000 native carnivores-including coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and badgers-from low-flying aircraft to benefit private livestock interests. Your tax dollars pay for this slaughter, which is conducted on public and private lands throughout the West by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services (formerly Animal Damage Control) program. Aerial gunning has long been controversial because of the excessive numbers of wild animals killed, the number of human fatalities that have occurred, and the cost to taxpayers. At least 38 aircraft flying the low-altitude missions have crashed during the past 18 years, resulting in 17 human fatalities and 39 injuries. · Aerial gunning of wildlife is unsafe, inhumane, and an enormous waste of public funds. Other nonlethal means of predator management and animal husbandry techniques have been found to be more effective than aerial gunning in reducing livestock losses. · The aerial gunning program is biologically and ecologically reckless, as research has shown that the killing of large native carnivores, such as the coyote, can cause ecological instability and result in decreased species diversity. · Aerial gunning programs are fiscally wasteful, costing hundreds of dollars per animal killed and millions of dollars in taxpayers money each year. The annual cost of Wildlife Services' predator control programs, which includes aerial gunning, is $10---21 million (approximately half of which is federal money), a figure that greatly exceeds the estimated $7 million in livestock lost to predators. In every western state, the cost of Wildlife Services' livestock protection program exceeds reported livestock losses. ------------------------- NOTE: any question, contact Camilla Fox. The comment period will run until September 4, 2001. Be sure to let the Departement of Justice know that : 1: You would like to see NICS to establish a REGISTRY of GUN purchasers. 2: The background checks on all gun purchasers through NICS should have retention of personal information on all gun purchasers. 3: Guns are purchased and sold often anonymously, without background checks and frequently it cannot be traced to later commit crimes; Gun violence is a pervasive, most serious national problem that is exacerbated by the availability of guns at gun shows, flea markets, and other organized events. Therefore the background check of all gun purchasers are extremely important to make sure the safety to the nation in the firearms trades. PUBLIC COMMENTS: SEPTEMBER 10. 2001 The Bush administration is trying to undo historic protections against logging and roadbuilding in the last wild areas of our national forests -- including four million acres here in California. Public comments are due next month, so tell the administration our wild forests deserve to be protected -- not exploited. CONTACT INFORMATION : Roadless ANPR Comments USDA-Forest Service-CAT P.O. Box 221090 Salt Lake City, UT 84122 ----------------------------- SAMPLE LETTER : Dear Forest Service Chief Bosworth, I strongly oppose any change to the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. The current rule protects our last, best forests, as well as nearby communities, homes, and property, and strikes a balance between preserving our remaining wildlands and accommodating competing uses; there is no need to amend the rule in any way. I particularly oppose allowing individual national forests to opt out of the rule and decide to go back to logging, building roads in, or otherwise developing these pristine wild areas. A million and a half Americans have already gone on record supporting the roadless rule -- don't ignore this huge outpouring of public sentiment. Implement the original rule immediately, and defend it against industry and other lawsuits, so these last wild forest lands will remain a legacy for future generations. Of the 707 Ontario wolves killed in 1995 for the commercial sale of their pelts, 93% were caught in neck snares. Each of those lives ended tragically for a mere $40 a pelt. Neck snares are wire nooses designed to tighten as the animal pulls against it. The more a snared animal struggles, the tighter the noose becomes and the greater the suffering. Snares frequently have to be replaced after a capture; bent out of shape by the animals that struggled in pain trying to escape. SNARES ARE NOT A QUICK KILLING CRUEL DEVICE According to the Canadian General Standards Board, a quick killing trap must render the majority of target animals unconscious within 3 minutes in order to be considered humane. Ø Snares do not consistently target wolves around the neck. If wolves are caught around the stomach or paw, massive suffering and injuries may occur when the wolf attempts to escape. Ø If the animal is still alive when the trapper checks the snare, a common killing technique recommended by Trapping Trade Magazines is for the trapper to stand on the animal's chest until it finally dies. Quick killing bullets are seldom used, as this would lower the value of the pelt. Ø Since snares are often set in remote areas, wolves often starve or freeze to death before the trapper makes it out to check the trap. Since snares are quick and inexpensive to make, trappers often set many in one given area. The technique is known as " saturation snaring " and can effectively eliminate an entire wolf pack. Since snares are homemade, there are no manufacturing standards to meet. Snares are not selective in what they target. Dogs, cats and endangered species can be unintentional victims of snaring. For every wolf caught in a snare, it is expected that at least one other animal is caught accidentally. Though banned in 17 American states and the southern regions of most Canadian provinces SNARES ARE THE NUMBER ONE KILLER OF WOLVES IN ONTARIO! WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP : Please write letters to John Snobelen, Minister of Natural Resources KEY POINTS : Here are some points that you may wish to consider in your letter: Ø Demand a complete ban on snaring! Many other jurisdictions throughout the world have found the cruel and indiscriminate nature of snaring unacceptable. It is time for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to keep up to pace with changing attitudes towards wildlife. Ø The vast majority of Ontarians are against the use of snares. Minister Snobelen assures Ontarians that the best wildlife management decisions are made by balancing public opinion with science. In a recent survey conducted by OraclePoll Research, 83% of the respondents opposed the use of cruel snares. Ø Most hunted and trapped species in Ontario have had provincial management plans in place for years. At the very least, wolves should be granted one as well. Currently, trapping of wolves is allowed year round without any quota restrictions. This is ecologically unjustifiable! PLEASE WRITE TO: Hon. John Snobelen Room 6630 Whitney Block 99 Wellesley St. West Toronto, ON M7A 1W3 CANADA ---------- (Reference source: http://www.earthroots.org/ ) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ ISSUE # 7 : OPRAH, PLEASE TELL THE WHOLE STORY OF PREMARIN ! With millions of female viewers, The Oprah Winfrey Show has the potential to truly spread the truth about Premarin nationwide. However, during a recent episode in which Oprah interviewed guests about menopause and hormone replacement, the issue of how Premarin, the most popular hormone replacement drug, is produced never came up. Instead, Oprah allowed her guests, including Premarin spokesperson Lauren Hutton, to tout the benefits of hormone replacement therapy without ever acknowledging that this drug is made with an estrogen derived from horse urine. Ask Oprah to look at the entire Premarin picture, including the fact that tens of thousands of mares and foals are suffering to produce Premarin. We've done so as well and are now hoping you'll help us reach out to Oprah. To add your voice to ours, go to http://www.oprah.com/email/tows/email_tows_main.html to submit a STORY SUGGESTION. Please help counter their influence by sending this letter TODAY (changing a few of the words so they all don't sound alike!) I commend you for your compassionate and ethical decision to ban the transport of animals captured in the wild for commercial purposes. Your decision represents a great step forward for the millions of primates, birds, reptiles, fish and other animals who are torn away from their families and habitats to be used as exotic pets or for food, biomedical research, or retail store displays. These animals cruelly languish for the rest of their lives and I am so appreciative that you have decided to ban their transport. While currently the trade in wild animals is still legal, I applaud you for taking a stand for what is right and ask you not to cave in to the pressure of wildlife dealers and other interest groups who are lobbying Lufthansa to rescind their shipping ban. I want to ensure you that I, my business associates, and family members will remember Lufthansa when making our travel plans. Sincerely yours, Your Name, Your Address. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Antioxidant compounds found in soy foods have been shown to reduce levels of hormones associated with breast cancer risk in women. Now, the results of a small study suggest that other factors associated with soy may also play a role in lowering cancer risk. ......... Estrogen can stimulate the growth of some types of breast cancer cells and is thought to play a role in the development of some cases of breast cancer. Women with a higher lifetime exposure to estrogen --for instance, those who got their first period at an early age, those who do not have children and women who do not breastfeed--may face a higher risk of breast cancer. The hormone progesterone also contributes to breast cancer risk by helping tumors to grow.
