We write to you today with a rare opportunity to make history for animals

in Congress. We are including this one item this week so that you may

focus your efforts on these two amendments. Your action is urgently

requested and greatly appreciated. Your phone call can help countless

animals.

 

FORCED MOLTING AMENDMENT PUT ON HOLD;

COCKFIGHTING & DOWNED ANIMALS TAKE

CENTER STAGE:

 

A change in the Senate calendar has put the " Leahy-Fitzgerald Amendment to

S. 1191 " (to curtail " forced molting " of hens) on the back burner for at

least the next few days. Instead, the " Emergency Agriculture Assistance

Act " (no bill number) is expected to be up for consideration in the Senate

today or tomorrow. Two animal protection amendments will be offered on

the Senate floor:

 

1) ALLARD AMENDMENT: Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) will

offer an amendment to attach the full text of S. 345 to the

Emergency Agriculture Assistance Act.

This anti-cockfighting provision seeks to bar interstate transport

of birds for the purpose of fighting. In fights, birds are drugged to

heighten their aggression, have their legs affixed with razor-sharp

knives, and are placed in a pit to fight to the death -- all for

amusement and illegal gambling.

 

2) AKAKA-LEAHY AMENDMENT: Senators Daniel Akaka (D-HI)

and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) will offer an amendment to attach the full text

of S. 267 to the Emergency Agriculture Assistance Act. This bill seeks

to stop the mistreatment of " downed animals, " farm animals who,

because of disease or injury, are unable to walk or stand and are often

chained and dragged as they are transported from stockyard to

slaughterhouse.

 

 

The current Emergency Agriculture Assistance Act provides an excellent

vehicle to finally address these terrible abuses and enact the

anti-cockfighting bill and the Downed Animal Protection Act.

 

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please take a moment to make a very important phone call to your two U.S.

Senators, asking them to " SUPPORT The Allard Amendment and the

Akaka-Leahy Amendment to the Emergency Agriculture Assistance Act. " Call

the Capitol Switchboard: 202/ 224-3121 or 800/ 648-3516 today, as we

expect the vote on this bill to be taken TODAY (Thursday, July 26). The

opposition is already flooding Senate offices with calls opposing these

amendments, so your action RIGHT NOW is crucial! If you need help looking

up the names of your U.S. Senators, visit www.senate.gov or call The HSUS

Government Affairs office at (202) 955-3666.
