B: URGENT, PLEASE HELP COMPASSIONATE ACTIVISTS IN JAIL .

-----the Original Message from -----

<ida-nyc >

Monday, July 16, 2001 7:18 AM

Over 30 NY NJ and other NE activists arrested at demo at HLS-

Bail is an outrageous politically motivated $25,000 per person!!!!

CALLS URGENTLY NEEDED!

As of Sunday July 15 AM, there are still 17 activists in jail, some who

were at their first demo, in Middlesex County NJ; were arrested Friday

at a house demo.

They are not being provided with food, have been put in lockdown without

access to a phone because another inmate attacked a guard (so all are

punished). They are being charged with knowingly and purposefully

violating an injunctio n about doing house demos at HLS employees' homes,

BUT the injunction does NOT apply to the county she lived in (Middlesex),

so the arrests are unlawful and the bail is outrageous and politically

motivated. (Many other violent criminals do not even get $25,000 bail!

WE NEED CALLS TO BE MADE TO THE JAIL NOW!!! PLEASE!

They need to be bombarded with pressure to release these nonviolent

activists and get them vegan food until then.

WHAT YOU CAN DO!!

1: CONTACT MIDDLESEX COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

*Call the jail and demand that the activists be released on their own

recognizance(ROR) as they are not a threat to society or flight risks

and that, in the meantime, they be given vegan food.

Middlesex County Adult Correctional Facility: (732) 297-3636.

*Also call the county prosecutor and ask him to have the non-violent

activists released immediately without bail.

Glenn Berman: (732) 745-3332 x3333 / fax: (732) 745-2791

e-mail: MCPO (@intak.net )

*Middlesex County Court

(732) 247-0922 ask for Judge Kollar, the monster that set the outrageous

bail for the 21 arrested at Katherine Brower's home.

(732) 247-0922 ask for Judge Gordon, the pathetic little man that set the

outrageous bail for the 8 arrested at the BNY.

2: ALSO : WE NEED A LAWYER TO be calling the jail and getting these

activists out! We have no lawyer yet! The lawyer who is supposed to be

working on this case in place of the regular lawyer who is on vacation is

not returning calls. If you know or are a lawyer who can help PLEASE

call Barbara Stagno /IDA at 914-693-6559

C: URGENT , REJECT Bush anti-environmental, pro-industry nominee

John Graham. (possible Deadline July 17 , 2001 )

LAST CHANCE! Urge your senators to reject Bush nominee John Graham

President Bush's nominee to fill a pivotal administration position has a

long record that's pro-industry and anti-environment, anti-consumer, and

anti-health protection.

Senate will likely vote on whether to confirm Bush nominee John Graham

for an obscure but extremely influential government position --

Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA),

within the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In this role,

Graham would serve as the nation's regulatory gatekeeper, within the

Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In this role, Graham would

serve as the nation's regulatory gatekeeper, passing judgment over all

major national health, safety, and environmental standards.

Over the past decade, Graham has been an ally of the business community

and played a leading role opposing strong government safeguards.

If confirmed, Graham would have the power to accomplish much of his

agenda to roll back vital public health, workplace and environmental

protections.

The confirmation vote could happen as early as next Tuesday, July 17.

Please contact Senators and urge them to oppose John Graham's

confirmation!

HOW YOU CAN HELP :

1: Please simply send a free fax to your Senators by clicking here :

http://www.citizen.org/faxserver/letter2/step1.htm

( For more information about the John Graham Nomination,

http://www.citizen.org/congress/regulations/graham.html )

2: Send an Email to all of U.S. Senators to OPPOSE the NOMINATION:

SAMPLE LETTER :

SUBJECT : Please OPPOSE Dr. John Graham nomination as the Administrator

of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs(OIRA)

Dear Senator,

I strongly oppose the nomination of Dr. John D. Graham to direct the

Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Office of Management

and Budget. This position plays an extremely powerful role in

establishing regulatory safeguards for every agency of our government,

and Dr. Graham possesses a consistent anti-regulatory record

of discounting risks of pollutants and applying controversial methods

based on disputable assumptions without fully considering the risks and

benefits to public health and the environment.

Furthermore, Dr. Graham's work at the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis

has been funded by major industries who oppose regulations protecting

public health and the environment and who have directly benefited from

Dr. Graham's studies, making it difficult to imagine how Dr. Graham could

effectively fulfill his responsibilities free from conflicts of interests

and with the public view in mind.

Again, I urge you to vote 'No' on John Graham's nomination to this

critical administration position.

Sincerely,

Your Name,

Your Addres,

City, State, Zip,

U.S. Constituents.

Trappers Want Commemorative Stamp-Tell USPS No!

The National Trappers Association (NTA) is pressuring the US Post Office

to develop a pro trapping postage stamp. The NTA has even threatened to

sue the US Post Office if they don't get their way.

People opposed to cruel traps generated letters to the post office about

this issue a month ago. But the trappers are making a second push to get

their way.

SAMPLE LETTER :

RE: Please do NOT issue a Trappers Commemorative Stamp

I am firmly OPPOSED to the USPS issuing a Trappers Commemorative Stamp.

Please do NOT give into the threats of the National Trappers Association

(NTA), a small organization that is out of touch with the majority of

Americans.

Any stamps commemorating fur trapping will serve no purpose other than to

glorify cruel devices that crush into animals paws, tear flesh, and rip

tendons. Despite the loud threats of the NTA, the majority of Americans

do NOT favor trapping, and the USPS should NOT issue a stamp that

glorifies cruelty because of the threats of a few loudmouth trappers.

E: SENATOR BYRD SPEAK UP FOR ANIMALS :

Ask him to help Downed Animal Protection Act .

Last week, Senator Robert Byrd, one of the most influential voices in

Washington, DC gave a passionate speech in which he denounced the

cruel treatment of animals on factory farms and appropriated funding to

improve the enforcement of animal welfare laws.

Please write to Senator Byrd,

1: THANK HIM him for speaking out against farm animal cruelty, and

let him know you support his work to protect animals.

2: Ask him to do whatever he can to advance the Downed Animal

Protection Act (S. 267) in the U.S. Senate.

Some KEY POINTS you may wish to include:

* Farm animals have been excluded from basic humane protection and

deserve to be protected under the law

* Farm animals too sick even to walk (i.e. downed animals) are treated

like inanimate hunks of meat, literally dragged to slaughter to to be

used for human food

* The use of downed animals for food poses a threat to human health

F: PROTECT GIANT SEQUOIA NATIONAL MONUMENT.

PUBLIC COMMENTS : DEADLINE: JULY 24th, 2001

----- Original Message From -----

" Earth Action " <earthaction

Wednesday, July 11, 2001 9:28 AM

Tell the Bush administration to uphold protections for the

Giant Sequoia National Monument

The Forest Service is accepting comments through July 24th for a

management plan it is creating for the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Speak out to ensure the plan puts the Sequoias' future first.

WHAT YOU CAN HELP :

1: You can contact the Forest Service directly from NRDC's Earth Action

Center at: http://www.nrdc.org/action

(we'll send a copy of your message to Ann Veneman, secretary of the

Agriculture department, which oversees the Forest Service).

2: Or use the contact information and sample letter below to send your

own message, and please include your own reasons for wanting to insure

that the monument is afforded maximum protection.

Jim Whitfield, GSNM Team Leader

U.S. Forest Service

Sequoia National Forest

900 West Grand Avenue

Porterville, CA 93257

Please send a copy of your message will also be sent to:

Secretary Ann M. Veneman

U.S. Department of Agriculture

14th & Independence Ave., SW

Washington, DC 20250

Dear Mr. Whitfield,

In response to the Forest Service's request for public comments regarding

its intention to prepare a management plan for the Giant Sequoia

National Monument, I am writing to let you know that I strongly support

a plan that will provide comprehensive protection to the *entire*

monument. Such a plan must not only protect the giant sequoia groves,

but all the surrounding ecosystem as described in the monument

proclamation, including the unique wildlife and the cultural,

archeological, and geological treasures contained in the monument.

In particular, I urge the Forest Service to create a management plan that

prohibits *all* industrial-scale logging in the monument area.

Any logging permitted must be strictly limited to clearing small trees,

no more than 10 inches in diameter, using only the existing

road system. I also urge the Forest Service to ensure that existing

public access and use, including camps and other facilities that

do not harm the monument's health, integrity, or designated objects, be

permitted, and that the Tule River Indian Tribe be assured of the

ongoing input into monument management decisions needed to

protect cultural sites and promote tribal interests.

Sincerely,

Your Name,

Your Address,

City, State, Zip.
