Urgent-Oppose CTA Trapping Proposal

SAMPLE LETTER :

Subject : Comments on the Colorado Trappers Association Proposal

Please count me among those who strongly oppose the Colorado

Trappers Association (CTA) proposal to open a trapping/shooting

season on 9 currently protected species. I also disagree with the CTA's

petition to begin calling/shooting seasons on several of these species.

Presently, no population facts exist for these species, and the Colorado

Division of Wildlife (CDOW) admits to no biological grounds for trapping

/shooting them. In fact, in 1995 the CDOW closed hunting season on

the American pine marten, swift fox, gray fox, long- and short-tailed

weasels, mink, ringtail, opossum, and western-spotted skunk because

none of these animals were involved in property or livestock damage.

The CTA wants them for their fur, period. Trapping is a dying industry.

The National Trappers Association reports a decline from 17 million

fur-bearing animals trapped in the mid-1980's to an estimated 4 million

currently trapped in the U.S. Bill H.R. 1187, currently before Congress,

bans the use of steel jawed leghold traps at the federal level.

These hit or miss devices snap shut on 2 to 10 times as many trash

animals. Dogs, cats, deer, livestock, endangered species, and even small

children suffer agonizing pain in the grip of leghold traps.

A Gallup Poll showed that 74% of Americans want all traps banned.

And in Colorado, the majority of residents supported Amendment 14

to prohibit the commercial/recreational use of body-gripping traps.

ALL traps are inhumane; the CTA merely proposes to switch from

body-gripping traps to box/cage traps.

Please do not cater to the concerns of a marginal special interest group.

While the CTAs plan may be legal, it certainly doesn¹t represent the

voice of the majority who supported Amendment 14 and who oppose

the cruel slaughter of animals for their fur.

Thank you for the opportunity to express my concerns.

I look forward to your feedback.

Sincerely,

ISSUE # 2 :

EPA PUBLIC COMMENTS ON CAFO

" Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation " :

DOCKET NUMBER : OW-00-27

DEADLINE : JULY 30 , 2001

FACTORY FARM POLLUTION

Speak out for stronger controls on factory farm pollution Factory

farms dump millions of gallons of manure into the environment every year.

Most factory farms, which raise thousands of animals in close quarters,

store manure in lagoons that can be larger than football fields and then

spray it untreated on land. Excess manure flows into nearby waterways,

killing fish, polluting drinking water and spreading antibiotic-resistant

bacteria into the environment. The manure also emits toxins that pollute

the air. And the lagoons themselves are prone to breaking, spilling

animal wastes into surface water and leaching it into groundwater.

Although nearly 30 years ago the Clean Water Act identified large

feedlots as a primary source of pollution, the EPA has not kept pace

with the exploding growth of factory farms, and the agency's rules are

riddled with loopholes, allowing some 70 percent of large factory farms

to escape regulation. Even in cases in which the EPA or States require

factory farms to obtain permits to control water pollution, those permits

do not prevent untreated manure from reaching waterways.

The EPA proposed revised factory farm regulations in January

and is accepting public comments through July 30, 2001.

WHAT TO DO :

Send the EPA a message demanding strong regulations that will stop the

environmental harm and public health threats caused by factory farms.

SUBJECT : STOP POLLUTION FROM FACTORY FARMS.

DOCKET NUMBER : OW-00-27

Dear Assistant Administrator Regas,

I am troubled by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs)

that are polluting our air and waterways. I support strong regulations

to prevent pollution from these factory farms. These industrial hog,

chicken, cattle and dairy operations pollute more than 27,000 miles

of our rivers and streams, and jeopardize public health by contaminating

drinking water supplies and by emitting toxic gases and odors that

sicken workers and community residents.

A typical pig factory farm generates raw waste equal to that of a city

of 12,000 people. According to the Environmental Protection Agency,

factory farms pollute our waterways more than all other industrial

sources combined. In December 1997, the Senate Agricultural

Committee released a report that stated that animals raised for food

produce 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population,

roughly 68,000 pounds per second, all without the benefit of

waste treatment systems. (see References # 1, # 2 )

The EPA's final rule must establish a program for pollution control that

states:

1: CAFOs with more than 1000 animals must obtain individual permits

that include monitoring and reporting requirements to protect water

quality;

2: The public should be notified of all proposed CAFOs and

have the opportunity to participate in the permitting process;

3: New CAFOs should not be allowed to use large-scale liquid

waste lagoons and sprayfields, and existing lagoons and

sprayfields should be phased out; and

4: Land application of wastes must be limited to legitimate

crop needs and limits must be enforceable to prevent over-applied

waste from fouling waterways.

5: There's a new type of agriculture on the horizon.

Please regulate all of the Hog farmers to start using Hoop barns

which is a new and more more humane and environmentally friendly

method of housing pigs. Humane Sustainable Agriculture is a way

of farming that is sensitive to the needs of animals, the integrity of

the environment, the needs of family farmers and the integral role of

rural communities in preserving our vital and diverse culture.

It is more Affordable. Hoop buildings are approximately 1/3 the cost

of conventional buildings. (see Reference # 3 )

Again, I urge you to protect our communities and the

environment by incorporating these elements into the final rule.

Sincerely,

The PA Horse Transport Bill, HB 1139 passed the PA Senate

today, June 21, 2001 by a vote of 49-0. The bill is expected to be

signed into law by Governor Ridge. The Governor has 10 days to

sign the bill.

The EPN appreciates all the individuals and organizations

who have supported our efforts and worked toward passage of this

legislation. The EPN applauds Rep Lynch for sponsoring this legislation

and the PA Legislature for passing the Horse Transport Bill.

Members of the EPN first approached the PA legislature in 1996 asking

for legislation to ban the use of double deck cattle trailers in PA.

Members of the EPN later testified on the cruel and inhumane transport

of horses in double deck cattle trailers in June 1998 at a House

Judiciary Committee hearing held in Gettsyburg, PA. The EPN contacted

the New York State Police in 1997 urging them to step up enforcement of

NY law banning the use of double deck cattle trailers. The increased

enforcement has resulted in numerous guilty convictions and $8000.00

paid in fines. The EPN also called for enforcement of PA's currently law

prohibiting the cruel and inhumane transport of horses resulting in

Arlow Kiehl and Harold Rodgers arrest and later conviction in the

summer of 2000. Kiehl is appealing that conviction on June 25,

2001 in the Lancaster County Courthouse.

SOY , NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSES !

Thursday, June 21, 2001

By Monique N. Gilbert

Soy, and most soy-based products, are nutritional powerhouses.

Soybeans are the only plant food that has all of the essential amino

acids our body requires, making it a complete protein. Soy foods

do not have any cholesterol, and most are high in fiber, vitamins,

minerals, and phytochemical compounds (like isoflavones) that work

together to create numerous health benefits.

ISSUE # 5 :

WASHINGTON POST ON PIG FARMING:

Following up its expose of modern slaughterhouse cruelties [ " They Die

Piece by Piece " (4/10/01)], the Washington Post reported Monday on the

abuses rampant in modern pig farms. Chief among the cruelties is the use

of " gestation crates, " metal crates only two feet wide which keep pigs

locked in place for most of their three to four year lifespan. Says one

Texas Tech University researcher, " I think the pork industry has to deal

with the reality that they are raising sows in ways many people will find

unacceptable. . . most consumers, when hit cold, will not think the

crates are humane. " Because of this, the European Union (EU) has been

considering legislation to phase out the use of gestation crates.

Yesterday, EU ministers agreed to a ban (effective by 2013) on crates for

pigs beyond the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. In Florida, humane advocates

are hoping to spark a national campaign in the U.S. by introducing a 2002

ballot initiative to ban the use of gestation crates.

Re: Lisa Ling denounce the rights of animals .

Dear Concerned Citizens,

Please spread the word that Lisa Ling on The View, has again

denounced the rights of animals on the popular TV program.

She has this time voiced her objection to the guilty verdict of the

" road rage " man who tossed the innocent little dog into oncoming

traffic, killing him instantly. Lisa Ling said,

" but it was only a dog " on the program today.

Please encourage people to voice their disgust at Lisa Ling's continual

callous and heartless attitude towards animals, and threaten to boycott

The View's sponsors.

Don't forget , Lisa Ling is also the one endorsing the " Fur " too.
