You might not think that Talbots, the classic women's clothing store, could have anything in common with the cruel slaughter of whales and dolphins. But it does. The very same international conglomerate that owns the majority shareholder in Talbots also owns supermarkets in Japan that sell whale and dolphin meat.* Even meat from protected minke whales hunted in a recognized whale sanctuary finds its way to supermarkets in Japan. The government of Japan continues to allow whales to be killed in defiance of an international treaty and worldwide criticism. One of the ways to stop this is to take this off the shelves and eliminate the market for whale and dolphin meat. As long as whale meat can be plucked off supermarket shelves along with canned goods and toilet paper, the killing will continue. *[JUSCO (U.S.A.), Inc., Talbots's majority shareholder, is a wholly owned subsidiary of JUSCO Co., Ltd. Four of Talbots' nine directors also hold positions with JUSCO (U.S.A.), Inc. or JUSCO Co., Ltd., which also owns supermarkets in Japan that have been identified as selling whale and dolphin meat.] WHAT YOU CAN DO: Send a message to Talbots and to Japan today! Write, fax, or email Talbots and ask them to use their considerable influence to stop the sale of whale and dolphin meat in stores owned by the conglomerate. Remind them that if supermarkets in Japan stop selling whale meat, it will help reduce Japan's incentive to kill whales. Send your letters to: Mr. Arnold B. Zetcher, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer, Talbots, One Talbots Dr., Hingham, MA 02043 U.S.A. Fax: (781) 741-4369 (in USA ) email: arnold.zetcher (@talbots.com ) SAMPLE LETTER : Please refer the following sites : http://www.hsus.org/programs/wildlife/marine/talbots051601.html Source references : HUMANElines --- Issue 145 --- May 17, 2001 http://www.hsus.org/specials/whaling/talbots.html @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ CAMPAIGN # 3 : STOP USFWS EFFORTS TO KILL ENDANGERED TRUMPETER SWANS: For the past few years, the hunting lobby has been pressuring the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) to open a hunting season on the rare, federally-protected Trumpeter Swans. Because Trumpeter Swans closely resemble Tundra Swans (a non-protected species legally killed by hunters), hunters often make the mistake of shooting the endangered swans. To avoid the penalties associated with this, many hunters want a Trumpeter Swan season as a safety net when mistaken identity shoots occur. Last year, the USFWS caved in to hunters' demands, and, based on a questionable Environmental Assessment (EA), decided to open a hunting season on Trumpeter Swans in the Pacific Flyway. Although the EA was supposed to address the impacts of Trumpeter Swan hunting on the populations' survival, it completely failed to address this problem. A subsequent lawsuit filed by the Fund for Animals forced the USFWS was forced to write a new draft EA, which was just released in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, the USFWS' new EA STILL proposes a hunting season on both Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, and it STILL fails to address the biological and ecological consequences of opening such a hunting season. WHAT YOU CAN DO : The public is invited to send comments on the USFWS' new draft EA until May 25, 2001. Please send your comments to: Robert Trost, Pacific Flyway Representative, USFWS, Div. of Migratory Bird Management, 911 NE 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97232-4181. TALKING POINTS : Go to: http://www.fund.org to get the Talking Points to be included in your letters to USFWS, or click : http://www.fund.org/library/documentViewer.asp?ID=109 & table=action_alerts Or go to http://migratorybirds.fws.gov/ to read a copy of the USFWS' proposed EA. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ CAMPAIGN # 4 : PETITION TO PROTECT GRAY WHALES UNDER ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT : On March 28, 2001, Australians for Animals, The Fund for Animals, and several other supporting groups filed a petition asking the government to list the Eastern North Pacific population of gray whales as an endangered or threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This population of gray whales, the only viable population remaining in the world, was protected by the ESA from 1970 to 1994, when it was prematurely delisted primarily for political reasons. Please send letter /email to NMFS and USFW. The Contact Info, Sample Letter and Talking Points are in the following site: http://www.fund.org/action/takeaction.asp?page=view & alert=150 Then click " More information on this issue " to get Contact info and Points. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ CAMPAIGN # 5 : IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME IN THE BEAR BAITING BUSINESS! Earlier this year, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) had planned to enlist the help of federal " Wildlife Services " agents to kill bears and mountain lions thought to be competing with hunters for elk in the Clearwater region (IDFG officials called their killing plan a " study " regarding elk populations). When public opposition forced officials to cancel their contract with WS agents, IDFG officials decided to go ahead with their killing plan anyway - this time, recruiting sport hunters to do the job. To make matters worse, IDFG officials are helping the hunters kill bears and mountain lions by supplying them with tons of dog food ---- bait to attract the animals within range of the rifles. Bear baiting is outlawed in most states and is even shunned by most hunters as unfair and unsporting. The IDFG's actions are a shameful violation of the principles of fair chase and of sound ecosystem management. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please contact Governor Kempthorne and the IDFG to express your opposition to the IDFG's " study " and particularly their involvement in baiting. Let them know: 1): The IDFG should not serve as a facilitator for hunters who choose to engage in unethical practices; 2) Predators are beneficial and necessary to healthy ecosystems; wildlife agencies should not create policies to satisfy the narrow interests of hunting groups; 3) The collection of scientific information does not require killing animals to understand population fluctuations and dynamics; wildlife agencies need to step into the 21st century and use nonlethal methodologies to conduct studies and research. CONTACT INFO : 1) The Honorable Dirk Kempthorne, Governor of Idaho, P.O. Box 83720, Boise, ID 83720-0034 Tel: (208) 334-2100 Fax: (208) 334-2175 Email: Governor (@gov.state.id.us ) 2) Rod Sando, of Idaho Department of Fish and Game, P.O. Box 25, Boise, ID 83707 Tel: (208) 334-5159 Fax: (208) 334-4885 / Email: Rsando (@idfg.state.id.us ) (References sources: http://www.hsus.org/programs/government/humanelines.html ) ====================================== CAMPAIGN # 6 : CUT OUT THE MARKET FOR `DOWNED ANIMALS': " Downed animals " are cows, steer, pigs, and sheep who, because of grave injuries or illness, are unable to stand or walk. Historically, the livestock industry has treated these animals brutally: they are kicked, beaten, and dragged all the way to the slaughterhouse to be killed and rendered. Last year, in a landmark policy, the USDA announced: " USDA will no longer accept ground beef that includes product from non-ambulatory cattle, commonly known as `downers,' " for Federal programs, including the National School Lunch Program. Now, a petition has been filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to completely prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. By cutting out the market for downed animals, the livestock industry will have more of an incentive to treat animals humanely, euthanizing " downed animals " on-farm, and more importantly, preventing the injuries that cause " downed animals " in the first place. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please write to the US FDA in support of Docket Number 98P-0151/CP1. U.S. FDA, Dockets Management Branch, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, MD 20852 Fax: 301-827-6870 Email: FDADockets (@oc.fda.gov ) (please note that it is crucial to refer to Docket # 98P-0151/CP1 in your letters).
