PRESERVE 60 MILLION ACRES ROADLESS

PRISTINE FORESTS.

PLEASE REQUEST PRESIDENT BUSH TO IMPLEMENT

THE ROADLESS AREA CONSERVATION RULE.

BUSH MAY MAKE DECISION AS SOON AS May 4th, 2001

Dear Caring Friend ,

The Bush Administration is now considering whether or not to

implement the Roadless Area Conservation Policy.

They may make a decision as soon as May 4th, 2001.

Now is the time to raise your voice!

The Roadless Area Conservation Policy is one of the most popular

and balanced conservation policies in history. It is necessary to

preserve America's natural heritage for the public benefit by upholding

and implementing this historic plan.

This forest conservation effort achieves a true balance between the

recreational and economic uses for our National Forest lands.

Fifty-one percent of the National Forests remain open for logging, mining,

and other resource activities, while only 18 percent have been

designated as wilderness areas. This rule will ensure that the last

31 percent remains untouched and will be protected from logging,

mining and road building forever.

Enclosed SAMPLE LETTER AND CONTACT INFO.

Thanks.

SAMPLE LETTER :

RE: PLEASE IMPLEMENT 60 MILLION ACRES

ROADLESS AREA CONSERVATION RULE.

Dear Mr. President ,

A million and a half Americans wrote to the Forest Service supporting

the new roadless rule that keeps our last wild national forest lands wild.

Please Don't break that promise to America's kids and the endless

generations that will follow.

Please advise your JUSTICE Department to do its job and defend this

enormously popular rule from legal attacks, and under no circumstances

to pursue settlement negotiations with those who oppose the rule.

And make sure your Secretary of Agriculture commits to preserving

these lands in the same manner as her predecessor did.

This unprecedented national forest conservation effort protects nearly

sixty million acres of pristine forests without a single " No Trespassing "

sign for camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, bird-watching,

cross-country skiing, and a needed escape from our hectic lives.

These forests also provide clean air and water for our nation, and

habitat for over 1600 rare, threatened, endangered and sensitive species.

The policy was not a last minute initiative by the previous administration,

rather the product of two decades of broad debate and three years

of focused discussion and public participation. A record-breaking

1.6 million Americans submitted official comments, more than 95 percent

of which supported the strongest possible protection for remaining

roadless areas.

This forest conservation effort achieves a true balance between the

recreational and economic uses for our National Forest lands.

Protect these last wild forest lands so they will remain a legacy for

countless future generations forever. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Name,

Address,

City, State, Zip

Country.
