Although non-rs cannot access articles from JANE'S website, one can become an online r and receive unlimited top-secret information for just $1095 per year: http://jir.janes.com/ If you're a member of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) or the Environmental Liberation Front (ELF) or a terrorist who should be aware of the state of art of surveillance, a subscription to JANE'S is a must-have tool that should be included in your bag of tricks. The magazine subscription is a bargain at just $390 per year. The February issue of JANE'S contained this warning: " The US Agricultural Sector: A New Target For Terrorism?' The timely article (February 1, 2001) was written before the actual discovery of England's first case of Foot and Mouth Disease. One theory regarding the new European plague points directly at England's support of the recent American bombing of Iraqi military installations. Hoof and Mouth Disease had not been seen for decades in England. Not one case. Suddenly, there are outbreaks. British epidemiologists have no explanation. Just how seriously is America taking the potential for agricultural terrorism? Foot and Mouth Disease is a prime pathogen cited by the United States Defense Department study released in January, according to JANE'S. The potential for agricultural terrorism is being taken very seriously by America's intelligence community. So much so, that $40 million dollars has been added as a line item in the new federal budget to combat this potential threat. How easy is it to initiate an attack against America? There are 9.2 million dairy cows in this country. There are 100 million cattle roaming home, home on the range. Infect just one animal with Mad Cow Disease, and publicize the event, and our society will sprint into panic mode. Is $40 million dollars enough? Humans do not get sick from Food and Mouth Disease. We become carriers. One motivated terrorist could spread the disease from farm to farm in every one of America's states. What would be the state of our food supply after such an outbreak? Significant economic consequences would result from such an action, and public confidence in our government would be shaken. Farm animals are easily accessible. It is said that Foot and Mouth is a disease carried by the wind. JANE'S cites a pentagon report listing 22 lethal diseases carried by animals that are raised for the American food supply. Pigs and sheep and cows all have something in common. They catch these diseases. They have no immunity. In many cases, those diseases can easily be passed on to consumers. During the 1990's, the Centers for Disease Control revealed that there were over one billion American cases of foodborne illness. We catch those diseases by drinking the body fluids from diseased animals. We become what we eat. If and when the panic comes, if and when the terrorists strike, and the practice of hoarding food removes staples from supermarket shelves, will there be any good news? Good news, yes! Soybean plants are immune.
