And of course, THE MEDIA LOVES THESE PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES !Campaign Update: Burger King's animal welfare panel, made up of somevery good people, had its first meeting and discussed NOTHING, accordingto news reports. If you have any questions about this campaign, don'thesitate to call or email me (realizing that there are hundreds of you,so it may take me a moment to get back to you; call me if you want aquick reply!).From our campaign update on the Web: Dr. Peter Singer, author of AnimalLiberation, recently told the Los Angeles Times that McDonald'sconcessions on animal welfare represent the single greatest victory foranimal rights since he wrote his book in 1975. Just 10 months into PETA'scampaign against McDonald's, Dr. Temple Grandin, an animal handlingexpert from Colorado State University, told the Associated Press that shehad seen more progress in alleviating wanton cruelty in slaughterhouses"in the past six months than in [her] previous 20 years" of inspectingthem. She had been working for McDonald's for more than four yearsat that point, but it was PETA's campaign, and your diligence, that wonthe day for the animals. Now, we must force industrywide change, andthe next step is to make Burger King follow McDonald's lead.To that end, PETA has produced stickers, leaflets, posters, T-shirts,and an anti-Burger King video. What we need from you is your time.If McDonald's can change, so can Burger King, but not without your help! That's all for now. Sorry for any inconvenience. Together, we'll forceBurger King to change.BruceBruce G. FriedrichVegan Campaign CoordinatorPhone: 202-244-3709 (in U.S.A.)Voicemail: 757-622-7382, x342Take sides. This is unconscionable.Copyright 2001 Pacific Press Ltd.The Vancouver SunFebruary 28, 2001 Wednesday FINAL C EDITIONSECTION: NEWS, Pg. A3LENGTH: 759 wordsHEADLINE: Burger King hires B.C. expert to monitor slaughter of animalsBYLINE: Nicholas ReadSOURCE: Vancouver SunBODY:A professor of animal welfare at the University of B.C. has been hiredby Burger King to help improve the company's animal welfare standards.Last week, Dr. David Fraser met with corporate officials and otheranimal welfare experts at Burger King's head office in Miami for theinaugural gathering of the company's animal wellbeing council."Burger King seems to want to improve or ensure that there are goodstandards of animal care that go into their products," Fraser said in aninterview Tuesday. "So we would give them technical advice that theycould use to make that happen."No specific issues were discussed at the meeting, says Fraser, but amongthe concerns expected to be addressed are effective slaughterhousemanagement and the humane killing of animals. The committee is scheduled to meet quarterly, with the next meetingslated for May.Burger King is the target of a campaign by U.S.-based People for theEthical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which claims that because ofinadequate slaughterhouse standards, animals that end up in Burger Kingproducts may have been skinned or dismembered while they were stillalive.PETA wants Burger King to follow the lead of McDonald's Corporation byimposing new industry standards in slaughterhouses and egg-layingfacilities.As a result of a similar PETA campaign mounted in 1999, McDonald'snow conducts regular and unannounced audits of its U.S. slaughterhouses.According to Temple Grandin, an assistant professor of animal scienceand a noted expert on humane slaughter, these audits have improvedstandards in those slaughterhouses significantly."McDonald's has had a tremendous, tremendous improvement," said Grandin, who also has been invited to sit on Burger King's committee. "I saw morechange in 1999 than I've seen in my whole career. It just shows how whena huge corporation uses its corporate muscle to make changes, thatchange is made."McDonald's also now insists that egg-laying hens have more space percage, and that the practice of cutting off their beaks when they arestill chicks be phased out.McDonald's Canada has not made similar commitments in this country.Officials at its headquarters in Toronto were not available for commentTuesday.Burger King spokeswoman Chris Boesch said PETA's claims are falsebecause Burger King asks all its suppliers to adhere to U.S. federalstandards ensuring the humane slaughter of animals. However, according to a survey done by Grandin in 1996, only 30 per centof U.S. plants met basic humane standards when it came to stunninganimals. Those standards require that 95 per cent of all animals passingthrough a slaughterhouse be stunned with the first shot of a stunningbolt. In 1999, McDonald's inspected U.S. plants achieved a 90-per-cent record,a score Grandin says was maintained in 2000 as well. "This was extremelygood news," she said.Canadian slaughterhouses score worse. Only 60 per cent of the B.C.,Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario slaughterhouses she inspected in1999 could ensure that all animals were stunned with the first shotof the stunning bolt.Rob Doughty, also of Burger King, said his company's animal well-beingcommittee will examine McDonald's initiatives. One of the problems Burger King faces, he said, is that the company doesnot oversee slaughterhouse standards directly. Once an animal isslaughtered, it will then go to a company that prepares meat in bulk. After that, it will go to another firm that grinds the meat intopatties. Those patties are then sent to individual distribution centresbefore being delivered to Burger King outlets. He also said that Burger King relies on some of the same slaughterhousesthat McDonald's does to supply its meat. Neither company has a centralbeef distribution centre.Fraser said that, until now, Burger King hasn't insisted that itssuppliers meet any animal welfare standards. "They've been acceptingtheir products from a system where they're not monitoring animalwelfare. They're careful about health concerns and other things, but notanimal welfare."What we're seeing now is that in addition to what they used to monitor, they're now going to monitor animal welfare according to a set ofstandards."He's optimistic that changes will be made."What's interesting to me is that in typical American fashion, it'shappening because of the marketplace. It's not a government orregulatory thing. It's a corporate-driven thing. It's not how I imaginedanimal welfare problems being solved."GRAPHIC: Color Photo: David FraserTYPE: BusinessFor the latest Burger King campaign updates, be sure to check outWeb site at http://www.MurderKing.com.To or to this list, please visit http://www.murderking.com/email.html_People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals501 Front St., Norfolk, VA 23510757-622-PETA (in U.S.A. )http://www.peta-online.org===================================== Thanks so much for your kindness, compassion and action to help billions of suffering animals.
