URGE CONGRESS TO PROTECT LAB ANIMALS.INCREASE FUNDING FOR NON-ANIMAL TESTS.SAMPLE LETTER STARTS:(Please write your own letter or modify some wording of the followingsample letter or switch the paragraphs around . thanks. ) :Dear Honorable Senator,We would like to urge you NOT to weaken the "Animal Welfare Act"or stand in the way of protections for birds, mice, and rats inthousands of laboratories in this country ! Although they comprise 95% of all animals used in medical research,BIRDS , MICE and RATS have been excluded from the protectionsprovided by the Federal Animal Welfare Act. (AWA). Last year, animal protection groups finally made strides in correctingthis gross oversight, when the USDA agreed to an out of court settlementin which it would begin regulating the treatment of birds, mice, and ratsin labs. However, the National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR)persuaded the Chair of the Senate Agriculture AppropriationsSubcommittee to act to block the USDA from implementing the terms ofits settlement for one year in the attempt to get Congress to permanentlyexclude birds, mice and rats from Animal Welfare Act (AWA) protections.The animal research lab tests are outdated methods and provingfailure again and again. We must all go forward with the provingNon-animal test techniques. The Benchmarks in medical history haverelied on the following NON-ANIMAL BASED methodologies, as willfuture developments : IN VITRO research or TEST TUBE research on LIVING TISSUE. EPIDEMIOLOGY . BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND FUNGI reveal basic cell properties. AUTOPSY and CADAVERS . PHYSICAL MODELS . GENETIC RESEARCH . CLINICAL RESEARCH . POST - MARKETING DRUG SURVEILLANCE (PMDS). MATHEMATICAL and COMPUTER MODELING . All these Modern technology is largely responsible for the high standard of care we receive today. SPECIALIZATION also saves countless lives. The National Cancer Institute undertook a Twenty-Five years screeningprogram, testing 40,000 plant species on animals for anti-tumor activity.Out of this very expensive research many positive results surfaced inanimal models, but NOT a single anti-tumor drug emerged for humans.As a consequence, the NCI now uses human cancer cells for cytotoxicscreening. As Dr. Richard Klausner, the Director of theNational Cancer Institute said : "The history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancerin the mouse...We have cured mice of cancer for decades--and itsimply didn't work in humans. Not only the animals tests are useless but also millions of BIRDS, MICEAND RATS suffer, tortured , cut up and die in numerous labs in thiscountry year after year. It is important that we urge you again ,please DO NOT weaken the "Animal Welfare Act" or stand in the way ofprotections for millions of BIRDS, MICE and RATS in thousands oflaboratories in U.S. Again, we must urge you to greatly reduce the budget for painful anduseless, wasteful Animals lab tests . Instead, please greatly increasethe budget and funding for NON-ANIMAL BASED LAB TESTSand RESEARCH. It is the new trend and the most effectivescientific methods to improve human's health.
