Guest guest
SUBWAY SUE OTHER FRIENDLY VEGGIE , JUICE BAR ! Dear Friend , SUBWAY BLOCK OTHER FRIENDLY VEGGIE RESTAURANT. Please read the following AP press release. 1: FIRST, we warmly welcome Subway to make environmental and animals friendly much healthy veggie sandwiches in their mixed menu (still has meat items). 2: However, please encourage SUBWAY to accept other friendly " pure " Veggie restaurants too. There is no conflict interests in the same mall they are running. Because they are not 100 % identical items and flavors. Just like in the same mall, there could several restaurants selling the hot dogs or hamburgers or orange juice similar items coming out from different restaurants. There is no conflict interests. 3: Not only no conflict interests but also it will gradually draw more customers seeking the DIFFERENT " FLAVORS " healthy foods to the mall and it will increase business to ALL restaurants with increasing popular reputation on Veggie foods in that particular mall location. Therefore, overall, the little Atom's Juice Bar has positive impact to the mall and to all of the restaurants with different flavors of veggie foods. 4: More and more people recognize the cruelty and deadly health impact of the meat food. Many ethical people can not sit with other meat eaters next to them. For this reason we suggest Subway to greatly increase its Veggie items in its entire franchise chain worldwide. This is the new trend worldwide. As you can see many restaurants have been dumping Meat items , especially in Europe. Subway will eventually win the position in the ethical foods. Therefore , there is no worry to have other little veggie stores docorating on the side. In fact, it even increase Subway's position .. Please , contact SUBWAY to express your opinions and request them to drop the charges against another small eco-friendly shop Atom's Juice Bar in the same mall. He then went on to found a vegetarian group which distributed six thousand of the very oldest " Realities. " He has been active in the plant-based movement since then. That's why I consider him an EarthSave Chapter--in spirit. The story is, he opened a vegan health food store in the same mall as a Subway store. It took him over a year and a lifetime's savings to open. Just a few months after opening day, Subway sued him for being in the same mall and offering them competition--since they too offer " healthy " sandwiches! The press release is below, so you can get the basic details from that. What they don't say is that John has 3 children and this suit is causing extreme hardship for his family and his brother. None of them have seen a paycheck for the past 3 months. They have also been the target of unfriendly gestures and actions from Subway people (such as having their car smeared with mayonnaise). Atom's Juice Bar is also a certified green restaurant. That means that it is 100% eco-friendly. They use no styrofoam, and use only homemade cleaners such as vinegar and water. It seems to me that Subway needs to hear from us on this. It is truly an affront to all those who are choosing this lifestyle for ethical, religious, health or environmental reasons. If chapters and ESI get back to me with the thumbs up on this, I'll speak to John again, (who I just met on the phone this morning for the first time), and get more details so we can format an e-mail/story. What I do know right now is that they have started a legal fund for donations. Checks can be made out to : Atom's Juice Cafe 345 Fischer Road, Grosse Point, MI 48230. PLEASE Note on the check--> " Legal Fund Donation. " Subway's customer relations phone # is 1 800-888-4848, then 85, then 1 to speak to a person. COLLINS ..c The Associated Press GROSSE POINTE, Mich. (AP) - Subway is serious about its lowfat, low-calorie sandwiches. So serious that it's suing the landlord of one of its stores for letting a vegan cafe open three doors away in a strip mall. Owners of Atom's Juice Cafe - which doesn't sell meat or dairy products - say that lawsuit and another suit filed against it by the mall owner are nothing more than an attempt to run them out of business. Already, legal fees have drained the small shop's profits and increased its debt, said owner John Chetcuti. ``It blows me away,'' Chetcuti said. ``We're so far the opposite of Subway, I have no idea how we're in competition with them. My clientele is 5 to 10 percent of the eating population - the Buddhists, Sikhs, lactose-intolerant, Hare Krishnas, vegans and vegetarians. These people are not interested in Subway food. And Subway customers are not interested in our food.'' In October, the Subway shop owner, Doris Odren and her husband, Thomas, and Delaware-based Subway Real Estate sued Fisher Road Properties, owner of the small shopping area across the street from Grosse Pointe South High School. The suit says that Subway's national ad campaign ``emphasizes and stresses the healthy nature'' of submarine sandwiches, and that the landlord violated a no-competition clause in the lease by allowing a shop to move in that ``directly competes with Subway in their attempts to market healthy food products.'' In turn, the landlord sued Atom's for breach of contract, and Atom's countersued the landlord. The landlord's attorney was not immediately available for comment Monday. Subway signed its lease in 1991; Atom's signed its lease in 1999. Milford, Conn.-based Subway sells cold cut and vegetarian sandwiches, as well as meatball subs, soups, salads, cookies and sandwich wraps. The corporation has more than 14,000 stores in 76 countries. Atom's Juice Cafe serves wrapped soy and tofu sandwiches, dairy-free desserts and cookies, salads, bagels, soups and other non-meat, nondairy foods. Chetcuti said 60 percent of the food in his shop is organic. He said he's been a vegan - those who don't eat meat or animal products, including milk and eggs - for 15 years. Doris Odren said Monday she did not want to talk about the issue. Les Winograd, spokesman for Subway, said the company doesn't comment on pending litigation, but said it's not uncommon for strip mall owners and food stores to have no-competition clauses. Chetcuti owns Atom's with his brother, David, and the chef, Michael Cleland. He said the cost of legal fees has threatened to put the shop out of business. Gary Wilson, an attorney for Atom's, said a hearing is set for March 12 to determine if an agreement can be worked out. Chetcuti said the juice bar can't move, otherwise the brothers and their families would go bankrupt after spending $180,000 of ``borrowed and begged'' money to open the shop and another $7,500 on legal fees, he said.
