SIX DAYS LEFT FOR YOUR COMMENTS TO BE RECEIVED!

Folks, if you haven't finished your comment letters in response to the Makah

whaling EA, NOW is the time to get them sent off.

All comment letters must be RECEIVED by NMFS no later than this coming

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16....

Once again, we are asking that NMFS choose Alternative 4- no whaling. We are

also insisting that a full Environmental Impact Statement be done should

they choose to proceed further in allowing the Makah Tribe to kill whales...

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has posted their comment letter on the

SSCS web-site (www.seashepherd.org). You may find their letter very

informative and helpful as you finish your own letter.

You might also be interested to know that Ocean Defense International has

fully updated their web-site, as well (www.oceandefense.org). They have

posted the oral comments they submitted at the Makah EA hearing in Seattle,

and have posted a few pictures from that event, as well.

The clock is ticking! Get those letters done, and make sure they are

received by NMFS no later than this FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16!

CITY OF FORKS, WASHINGTON: BLOOD MONEY OR JUST GREED?

City looking into " riding the coattails " of Makah whale killing

----------------------------

We've been informed of a troubling development in the City of Forks,

Washington. Apparently, the President of the Forks Chamber of Commerce wants

to use $20,000 of taxpayer money to fund " rides " in the Makah whaling canoe.

Mr. Sperry states; 'We'll take advantage of how well the Makah are known

because of the whaling... " This would take the City of Forks OUT of a

" neutral " stance on the issue, and put them firmly into a " pro-whaling "

position.

There are bad ideas, and there are BAD ideas: Mr. Sperry, this is a BAD

idea.

Says a Forks-based activist; " I feel compelled to speak against using

Forks tax dollars to support such a globally unpopular political opinion and

the outdated, ill-advised practices endorsed by the Makah. "

She further states; " I fear that if the tourist who comes to this area to

whale watch, or the conservation minded visitor were to discover the City of

Forks has used tax dollars generated by the money used to pay for lodging to

support this political issue, business will be the victim...I feel this use

of tax dollars from our city's limited coffers do not reflect the interests

of a large portion of our community... "

The Forks City Council meets tomorrow night (Monday) to consider this issue.

We're asking you to write a brief, polite e-mail to share your views with

them BEFORE they meet. That means write your e-mail TODAY!

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

1) The use of taxpayer money in conjunction with the Makah hunt is

unconscionable

2) The City should, at the very least, remain neutral on the issue.

3) If the City of Forks wants to dabble in whale-killing, you'll never drop

another dime there- ever.

4) You'll be watching to see what decision they make at Monday night's

meeting.

SEND YOUR E-MAILS TO:

City of Forks Economic Development Director forksedc

We'll let you know what happens!
