It's hard to believe, but after promising a " cruelty-free " city, London's new mayor, Ken Livingstone, summarily evicted the only licensed pigeon-feed seller from Trafalgar Square. Bernard Rayner's family had been selling birdfeed under Nelson's Column since 1956. On October 20, after weeks of protests, PETA-inspired legal action, and appeals from around the world, England's High Court granted a temporary restraining order against the mayor over the feed ban, an action that allows Mr. Rayner to sell his feed again until the court hears the whole case. Your help is needed to keep the pressure on the mayor. Please write to him (and get friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors to do the same) demanding that he immediately reinstate the license to the feed vendor and consult with animal protection groups and pigeon experts to find a solution agreeable to all parties-one that is not to the detriment of the birds. Write to: The Honourable Ken Livingstone Mayor of London Greater London Authority Romney House Marsham Street London SW1P 3PY Fax: 020 7983 4000 Tel.: 020 7983 4008 E-Mail: mayor (london.gov.uk) Please also print a copy of PETA’s petition (http://www.peta-online.org/alert/00/2022.html) and send the completed forms back to PETA, and PETA will deliver them to the Greater London Authority. SAMPLE LETTER ***Include your name, city/state/country*** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ mayor Please stop starving the pigeons of Trafalgar Square Honourable Ken Livingstone, I understand that you have condemned the world-famous pigeons of London's Trafalgar Square to starve to death. It's hard to believe that after promising a " cruelty-free " city, you summarily evicted the only licensed pigeon-feed seller from Trafalgar Square. Bernard Rayner's family had been selling birdfeed under Nelson's Column since 1956. Avian experts agree: These domesticated birds, who for generations have known and depended upon this single source of food, will likely die of starvation. They have no experience foraging, and the young and very old are particularly and immediately vulnerable. In fact, since the ban, about a dozen pigeons have been found dead every day in the Square, with no visible signs of injury or illness, i.e., they starved to death. I demand that you immediately reinstate the license to the feed vendor and consult with animal protection groups and pigeon experts to find a solution agreeable to all parties-one that is not to the detriment of the birds. Your current “solution” is grossly inhumane and is not acceptable to members of civilized society.
