Guest guest
PLEASE READ (7) Missouri/Frozen Puppies/1-9-01 <Long> Source: hero (VICTORIA KING) I am sharing this story with you in hopes that you might be able to send a small donation for the medical expenses of these little ones. I have verified the story with the vet, who said it was the worst case of frostbite/self mutilation he had ever seen. By tonight he has promised me an email as to the condition of the first pup after surgery. It will be touch and go and I'm sure if you can't send a little something, please send good thoughts for the operation being successful. If you would like to pass this whole post on, I know Wendy would be very grateful. She has a huge financial burden on her right now. Wendy (S'Wheat Rescues) writes: " I am just so sick by what I found today! For those who don't know me by name, I am Wendy Wheaten, the one who had the rescued Wheaten puppy, Cassidy, whose leg was recently amputated. Yesterday on my way to work I saw a yellow shepherd mix and two black 7-8 week old puppies sitting on some railroad tracks near my home. I did not have time to stop but planned on looking for them on my way home. Unfortunately, circumstances delayed me and I did not get home until nearly 10 pm. I went back to the tracks and quickly found the mother and one pup living in a stack of railroad ties. I went back home, made a huge pan of food and took water and went back. The mother would not come near me, barking and growling, but th pup came close enough for me to get a good look at it and it looked to be in fairly good health. I searched around for the other puppy I had seen but could not find it - spent nearly two hours out in the cold and dark looking and finally gave up and came home. This morning when the sun came up I went back and what I found horrified me. I found the mother and the first black puppy right away and then started searching again. Soon I found what I was looking for, the second black puppy and then another brown puppy. I have never seen anything so awful in my life. The left front leg on the black puppy has no skin or fur left on it - just raw meat and bone sticking out, skin hanging off in shreds. The brown puppy's right rear leg had the toes litterally hanging off and the skin beginning to fall of the paw. The puppy's tail was also raw and dead almost all the way up. I was literally sick at what I saw, it was so horrible. I spent nearly half an hour getting the mother to let me close enough until I could grab these two babies and take them to my car. The mother and the other puppy followed and I was able to grab the third pup and throw him in the car too. All the time the mother running and barking and growling around me - acting like she was going to tear my arm off but never getting close enough to me to do it. When I got the pups in the car I opened the hatch and told the mother she could either change her attitude and jump in or I was leaving without her. I swear she understood me, because suddenly her demeanor changed. She came up, licked my hand and then jumped in the car like she had done it a million times. I called the vet on my cell phone to let them know I was on my way. Even with the warning the receptionist and two women waiting to see the vet in the office burst into tears when they saw these puppies. The vet checked them and the two puppies legs were frozen solid. The vet says the black puppy has been literally EATING his leg. They are both extremely anemic also. The puppies are both receiving transfusions as we speak - they are too anemic for the emergency surgery they need to save their lives. Both puppies are going to have thier frozen legs amputated at the hip and the tail on the one puppy as well. The vet says it will be touch and go but I am hoping that they will be able to save these babies. He said he has seen a lot of cases of frost bite but these are the worse he has ever seen I have told the vet to do whatever they have to do to save these puppies lives. I will be responsible for the bill and will raise the money to pay it one way or another. The mother and the other puppy seem to be in ok health - the vet is keeping all of them together right now as he does not want to stress the weak puppies any further. There are one of two possiblities here - either the puppies and mother were dumped and then they froze or, the more likely scenario is that someone had these dogs in their yard and never brought them inside. When they saw what had happened with the puppies they did not want to deal with it and then dumped them out in the rural area where I live. I cannot understand people who would do something like this no matter what the scenario. I hope there is a special place in hell waiting for the person who dumped these dogs!! So, of course, I am looking for help again. I cannot believe that now I will have 3, three legged dogs to take care of. I guess God sent them to me because he knew I would know what to do to take care of them. My dog population just swelled from seven to an unbelievable eleven dogs and my already stretched resources will not handle the costs for all of their medical needs. If anyone can help, please send donations to: Gladstone Animal Clinic, 7027 N. Oak Trafficway, Gladstone, MO 64118 S'Wheat Rescues PO Box 26274 Kansas City, Missouri 64196-9998 Please write " frozen puppies " in the memo portion of the check. The vets office is taking pictures of the puppies for me before they amputate and I will post them as soon as I get them. I am sorry to be so soon asking for help again but I think you can all agree that these are extenuating circumstances.
