This is disgusting, hopefully some of you out there can adopt some of these poor babies...sick bastards. What sort of a screwed up world are we raising our kids in?

Depressedly,

Christine

In Defense of Animals [ida]Sunday, 31 December 2000 11:00AnimalAdvocacy Subject: [AnimalAdvocacy] Please Help Beagles of Barrow Neurological Institute(Moderator's Note: While the protest has already occurred, your help is requested in writing the Sheriff's office and adopting the dogs who haven't "cooperated" with researchers by responded to the injected toxins and developing the "required" brain tumors -- see info at bottom of message.)PLEASE HELP THE BEAGLE DOGS AND PUPPIES OF BARROW NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTEThe intent of the Allogenic Glioma In Immune Competent Dogs project wasto create a canine model of a glioma or brain tumor by injecting fetalpuppies in the flank of the leg with glioma cells during the secondtrimester of development. The glioma cells have been harvested andgrown from a naturally occurring brain tumor in a sick dog. The fetalinjections are done in utero in a pregnant female beagle at thirty-sevendays in gestation. When the puppies are four to six months of age, theintent of this project is to remove subcutaneous tumors growing in theflank of the leg of each puppy and, using stereotaxic surgery, implantthe tumor in the cortex of the brain. This project started in 1990 andwas funded by National Institutes of Health in 1997. From 1990 through1999, Arizona State University housed many of the dogs and puppies usedin this project. Because ASU housed some of the animals, the ASU IACUCreviewed the project. In 1999, after reviewing this project for nineyears, and placing it on restricted approval for the last two years, TheArizona State University IACUC voted to terminate the canine gliomaprotocol. The project continues at Barrow Neurological Institute. As was Arizona State University, we are very concerned about the ongoingfailure rate of the canine glioma project and the continued killing ofdogs and puppies. More than three hundred dogs, primarily beaglepuppies, have died in this project. The project continues to have anongoing failure rate of 98%. After ten years and fifty fetal implantsurgeries, the failure rate is 98%. Michael Berens, Ph.D., theprincipal investigator on this project, is not a surgeon, veterinarian, nor a neonatologist. After performing fifty fetal implantsurgeries over ten years, Michael Berens still cannot see which puppiesare and are not injected with cancer cells. All puppies not developingtumors (one-hundred-and-thirty-eight to date) have been euthanized.Twenty-two more puppies await euthanasia. Fifty fetal implant surgerieshave produced only three tumors in a ten-year period. Dr. Berensindicates that tissue from the one-hundred-and-thirty-eight puppies, notdeveloping tumors and euthanized, will be used to do genetic studies tohelp Barrow understand why puppies do not develop tumors and help topredict allo-tolerance and tumor development. In fact, Dr. Berens cannoteven assure that a puppy was injected with brain tumor cells duringfetal surgery. Every puppy in the project has died with the exceptionof 22 puppies awaiting this fate. After 50 fetal implant surgeries, 21litters have been aborted, 73 puppies were stillborn or died shortlyafter birth, 10 puppies died of severe birth defects, 2 puppies died ofseizures and Valley fever, 7 puppies died of parvovirus, and 135 puppieswere born without tumors, could not be identified as injected with tumorcells, and were euthanized. 22 puppies and an undisclosed number ofmother beagles await this fate.HOW CAN I HELP?ATTEND THE PROTEST ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 29, 2000Please attend a protest against the continued death of these animals ina project that has gone from a 95% failure rate to a 98% failure rate. The protest will be held: Friday, December 29, 2000Time: 5:00 pm to 6:30 pmPlace: St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, 350 West Thomas Road,Phoenix, Arizona(We will meet on the sidewalk in front of the main entrance of St.Joseph's Hospital in Thomas Avenue)Feel free to bring signs. We would like signs to refer only to theBerens project and to stopping this project and helping the dogs andpuppies. If anyone plays a guitar or has a musical instrument and iswilling to help orchestrate some singing, we would like to havesinging. We also would like you to bring your children.
