Guest guest
VERY URGENT : DOVES IN DANGER IN IOWA , U.S.A. ! IOWA DOVE HUNTING BILL PASSED HOUSE AND SENATE !!! NOW, PLEASE ASK GOVERNOR OF IOWA VILSACK VETO ANY PRO-DOVE HUNTING LEGISLATION BY TUESDAY, JAN. 30th IS THEIR LAST CHANCE !!!! This year, hunting groups have actually succeeded in pushing a new bill, H.F. 43, through the legislature to allow the hunting of these peaceful, backyard birds. Animal concerned friends must work hard to fight back. H.F. 43 passed the House of Representatives (57-41) earlier in the month, and just passed the Senate by an extremely close vote (26-24) on Thursday (01/25). On Tuesday (01/23), Iowa governor Tom Vilsack stated that he would veto H.F. 43 if it should it pass the Senate vote on Thursday.. According to the Des Moines Register (01/24/00), Vilsack called the bill " terribly flawed, " and said that " it wouldn't make any sense to sign it. " Although the mourning dove has been protected in Iowa since 1918, hunting groups have repeatedly tried to pressure the state legislature into legalizing mourning dove hunting. The push to establish a hunting season on mourning doves flies in the face of all logic and decency : SAMPLE LETTER :(please copy the following letter and paste into the email website to the Governor.) Dear Honorable Governor Vilsak , Please VETO ANY PRO-DOVE HUNTING LEGISLATION that comes before you . We appreciate your pledge so far to veto H.F. 43. Please stand strong against this outrageous bill! The mourning dove has been protected in Iowa since 1918, Please protect these peaceful , magnificent backyard birds. Due to the following reasons : 1: Dove hunting is inhumane: nearly 20% of doves shot by hunters are wounded and not retrieved. 2: Dove hunting amounts to no more than mere target practice--- each bird yields only an ounce or two of meat. 3: There are already plenty of other game bird species that are legal to hunt in Iowa; hunters don't need to kill our state's symbol of Peace! If we can not even protect such gentle symbol of Peace, what else are we capable of protecting ? 4: Other federally protected birds, such as the American kestrel, are often mistaken for doves at a distance and will undoubtedly be shot by hunters as well. We would be very grateful to you to VETO any Pro-Dove Hunting legislation comes to you. PLEASE VETO H.F. 43 Now. Thanks so much for your kindness, compassion and urgent help. Sincerely Yours, (your name.) --------------- The Governor Vilsak's contact info : PLEASE CALL, FAX, AND EMAIL TO HIM URGENTLY : The Honorable Governor Tom Vilsak : Tel: 515-281-5211 (in U.S.A.)
