Guest guest
VERY URGENT, PLEASE OPPOSE ANTI-ENVIRONMENT NOMINATIONS.Dear Friend of animals, In just a couple days, the U.S. Senate will vote for the approvalof all the Cabinet members whom nominated by George W. Bush. The Sierra Club launched campaigns to OPPOSE Presidentelect George W. Bush's nominations of GALE NORTON as the Secretary of the Interior and JOHN ASHCROFT as Attorney General. Both nominees have "dismal" environmental records according toSierra Club. Please see the enclosed article at the bottom of thisemail . Please urgently send a email/letter to ALL of the U.S. Senators tourge them to OPPOSE nominations of Gale Norton and John Ashcroft. The U.S. Senators entire list is enclosed at the end of this letter. In your letter to Senators, the key points to urge them to OPPOSE are :1: GALE NORTON : Would be a natural disaster asInterior Secretary. Norton is the oil, mining and timber industry'schoice. She favors increasing the commercial and environmentallydestructive development of our national parks, forests and wild lands ! During the Ronald Reagan administration, Norton served asassociate solicitor at the Interior Department, authoring legal opinionsto support oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.Norton has also labeled government protections of endangeredspecies an example of excessive regulation.2: JOHN ASHCROFT : While in the Senate, Ashcroft voted againstadditional funding for environmental programs including theClean Water Action Plan and toxic waste cleanups at Superfund sites. He voted in favor of bills to roll back clean water protections, and toallow mining companies to dump cyanide and other mining waste onlarge areas of public lands next to mining sites. His open hostility to most environmental laws, how can we expectSenator Ashcroft, as Attorney General, to enforce environmental laws?3: According to the World Conservation Union released its "RED LIST'of Endangered Plants and Animals on September 28, 2000, dramaticincrease in the number of species threatened with extinction . Conservationists estimate that the current extinction rate is 1,000to 10,000 times higher than it should be under natural conditions. That means that in the first decades of the 21st century, manycreatures - from a majestic Albatross to Asian freshwater turtles -may join the ranks of the flightless Dodo bird. The report, examined some 18,000 species and subspecies around theglobe. Some 11,046 plants and animals risk disappearing forever, according to the most comprehensive analysis of global conservationever undertaken, the World Conservation Union's 2000 Red List ofThreatened Species. But scientists acknowledge that even a study of this magnitude onlyscratches the surface. Earth is home to an estimated 14 millionspecies - and only 1.75 million have been documented. Many may become extinct before they are even identified, much lessassessed by scientists. The primary reason: HUMANS. Everything from EXPANDINGCITIES to DEFORESTATION, AGRICULTURE and FISHINGPOSE A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO THE PLANET'S BIODIVERSITY.(Please refer: http://www.cnn.com/2000/NATURE/09/28/redlist/index.html ) Therefore , based on the above three important reasons, please urge U.S. Senators to OPPOSE the nomination of GALE NORTON as the Secretary of the Interior and JOHN ASHCROFT as Attorney General. Thanks for your kindness and urgent help.T.N.======================================P.S.: U.S. SENATORS LIST enclosed here : The following is list of most of the Federal Senators Emailaddresses.
