Guest guest
PCRM ON NBC " THE TODAY SHOW " KarenDawn1 [sMTP:KarenDawn1] Wednesday, January 10, 2001 11:46 AM DawnWatch - PCRM's Dr Neal Barnard on Today Show with Matt Lauer On Tuesday, January 9, Neal D. Barnard, M.D., head of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, was interviewed by Matt Lauer on NBC's TODAY SHOW. (If you are unfamiliar with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine please visit their website at http://www.PCRM.org to learn about their work.) Barnard discussed and gave ratings of popular diet books using a five star rating system. Lauer outlined the system for us, " For diets that are high in fiber, one star; sufficient fruits and vegetables, one star; low cholesterol, one star; low fat, one star, and low saturated fat, one star. " The Eat More, Weigh Less diet by Dr. Dean Ornish topped the list with five stars. Barnard said, " This is, first of all, the only one of these books that was written by someone who had actually done research on how the diet helps people to keep weight off over the long run. Well-published, very well-respected, and it's as close to a perfect diet as you are going to get. Every menu is vegetarian. There's a lot of fiber. Very rich in fruits and vegetables. It's very healthy. " Lauer added, " It can actually reverse the effects of heart disease, as well. " Predictably, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution came out at the bottom, with no stars. Barnard's review: " A very problematic book. Very seductive. Over the short-run, a lot of people go on this approach and they lose weight. But it turns out that what they're doing is, they're simply cutting out most of the foods they would normally eat, any food like starchy vegetables that has carbohydrates in them. So they're losing weight just because they're cutting out calories. What they're left with is so high in protein that it can be damaging to the kidneys over the long run. And this diet leaves out the healthy vegetables and fruits that are going to protect against cancer in the future.... It's a dangerous diet for people to follow.
